I know this sounds very awkward and makes absolutely no sense, but i have a theory that "we" who have jaw surgery are generally more intellingent than average.

Why i think so?

First of all, if we arrived to the decision of having surgery it means we make at least some degree of introspection.
Second of all, our jaw problems makes us understands difficulties, real problems and it gives us a point of view of who "suffers". We are therefore less prone to judge the other since we know what it means to feel "different" and not at ease.
I believe we are more sensitive, open minded and easy going.

I noticed that even after patients had AWESOME outcomes, they stay humble and remain the person they were before because they know how tough things can be for who is not in their position.

I dont know, i probably expressed myself in a really embarassing manner since english is not my first language and there are high chances i just wrote complete crap, but this is what came to my mind at this moment.
lol i hope you dont think im crazy

Hi to everyone, i am about to have my surgery (end of february, start of march?) and it has been difficult to convince my parents who were firmly against it.
one night, very depressed, i wrote a letter to my mom where i really opened my heart and i put on paper everythin i kept inside for months, and it really was a heartbraking letter.

Initially, she was still perplexed but after she read my letter 2/3 times she reflected and agreed and now she is supporting me through this whole thing. My dad too.

the point of all this post isif you are young and you need economic and moral support of your parents, this could be a different way to convince them.
it worked for me.

hope this can be helpful for somebody whose in the situation i was only few weeks ago.
Cheers!

No, the fact that Red has excellent occlusion means that Red has excellent occlusion: an important consideration. Red could have otherwise adequate mandible projection, and a genio could be all he/she needs. Each case is unique to the individual, and without pictures we can not even speculate, even as laymen.

i believe there must be something wrong with your diet. I still did not have surgery so im sorry if i cannot be very helpful, but i believe since youre only eating liquid food you are missing something. Try to balance and re establish your diet with organic food and the basic macronutrients (mostly carbos, some 20-30 percent proteins and some fat)

Sorry if i cant help you more than this, anyhow try to contact a physician.
Hope youll get better soon.

you dont actually jut your chin forward, you jut your whole mandible forward (you cant control chin bone movement).

the fact that teeth align perfectly does not mean anything.

In my case, i was looking into sliding genio after a failed chin implant only to discover even sliding genio would not help since what i need is a much bigger surgery.

dont make my same mistake, you will lose money, time, and will go through useless emotional rollercosters.

Hope you'll take my advice and see some max facs. They will help you. Please believe me.

Yeah you are right, I had my lower jaw brought fwd and then a genioplasty due to under developed chin. I could not of just had the chin done (and never would hae as it was just for the overall balanced look once jaw had been corrected).

first of all, the choice of a sliding genio over an implant is 100% CORRECT.

however, you might have other issues you are unaware of. Issues as, long face, micrognathia, vertical maxillary excess, lip incompetence, mentalis strain.

if your receding chin is only ACTUALLY a small chin (the bone segment of the chin is not developed correctly), go for the sliding genio.

If instead its not only a receding chin but a RECEDING MANDIBLE, a sliding genio would worsen your situation: having a big chin and a small jaw/mandible is not aesthetically pleasing.

My advice is go to an EXPERIENCED MAX FAC surgeon AND NOT a plastic surgeon. absolutely not the plastic surgeon.

The maxillo facial will help you very much, choose a very good one not just the first

Only a surgeon can really give you an answer, but I had a sliding genioplasty a month ago and my roots are really long - looking at the X-ray it looks like the nails are imbedded in them (but I know they are not).

Ask your surgeon, I'm so glad I had mine done.

I'm pretty much on the same timeline as you, I'm seeing my surgeon soon and we're planning on surgery for May. I dont have an exact date yet but I'm having double jaw surgery and genioplasty. I've been blogging about my process. MY Blog
I feel like I've developed a pretty bad lisp too.
Its a pain waiting for surgery but I'm getting so excited to know its so close. Glad to see someone else having it in May.

Hi there all i am considering genioplasty, however i fear that when my chin bone is cut my teeth roots will come in the way as my chin bone (where my front tooth roots approximately finish) is way too small approximately 1cm in vertical length.

Also if my chin bone is cut will there be enough room for the screws to be placed to fix my chin in place.

I dont want an implant as i am too young.

Any experts on the board thank you

I've been waiting a year, the pain is so horrible my doctor advised me to take time off school but I refused and have somehow been forcing myself to do the best I can.
I take heavy painkillers and see a massage therapist.
Its not easy but the teeth need to be in the right position or your bite will relapse, and trust me you don't want that.
The best thing to do at this point is get good pain meds, see a massage therapist, I heard acupuncture is really good but I'm too chicken to do it.
Good luck

Hey guys!!
So I've been blogging and making videos about my upcoming surgery for about a year.
I'm very excited because I'm finally surgery ready and I'm planning on surgery when I finish this term. I'm seeing my surgeon in a couple weeks and then I'll have a date for surgery.
My bite has changed a ton since I started this process, and the TMJ pain is horrible, but I'm just so excited.

Durden, I've heard as well that they are "the best" or "the rockstars of orthognathic surgery" BUT those have been just subjective opinions by a few forum members here and on another board. And especially the latter argument may be suitable for Arnett who has done extensive research and pionereed the field for decades but you must remember that Gunson was just a student at UCLA back in the early 2000s.

If your "small country" with just "two big cities" happens to be in Europe, I could point out a couple of names there that fits your criteria just as well. ;) However, I agree that the consultation with either of them is really an eye opener and worth the price. Besides I think that Gunson has a very nice demeanor. If you read between the lines you may understand that I might have some experience with them. :)

@Durden

The consultation was quite thorough. I learned a lot about my condition that I did not know. He even pointed out that I have a slight side to side head tilt to compensate for my slight asymmetry. I wanted a surgeon who is experienced with TMJ so that's why I've chosen to pay a little extra. My insurance will cover the surgery but only at out-of-network benefits, so I'll still have a decent portion out-of-pocket. I haven't had surgery yet by the way. I'm planning on surgery sometime this year. Feel free to ask any other questions.

It was seriously painful (and I consider myself to have a really high pain threshold!). My teeth just went super sensitive and I was in agony for about 48 hours. It doesn't happen to everyone but I wish my dentist had warned me about it so I knew what to expect.
If you google 'zoom whitening reviews' you can see what other people have to say about it. For me, it wasn't a pleasant experience but it was worth it in the end. Much like jaw surgery really!

Thanks for that Rachel. Why was it unpleasant? Painful? Definitely looks worth it though :) I've already saved away some money for it and cant wait til the time comes. I've found a place near me that does it for 480 which i know is steep but i know people that have been there for it. They do a half price mid week deal weirdly!

good to hear your surgeon is happy with progress. I know it's easy for me to say now I'm so far post op but try just to relax and not worry unless your face actually falls off! All the best with the rest of your recovery

I saw my surgeon yesterday, and while there has been some shifting, he doesn't seem to think it is a big deal, and will simply keep an eye on it, as my x-rays look good.

Thanks for your comments, they kept me from emotionally hyperventilating!

I got my zoom treatment done with my regular dentist. Not all of them do it though and mine has only been doing it for the last 12 months. It's not a pleasant experience but well worth it!
It cost me £300 and I had it done four days after my braces came off. Both my surgeon and orthodontist said there is no need to delay whitening once your brace come off if you want to have it done. I also paid £200 for nite white treatment and have enough gel to keep my teeth sparkly white for the next five years. I just have to pop some inside my retainers once every two weeks to keep topped up

RYANvaughn, Nice, are you satisfied with consultation? Did you do any model things and did he show you the simillar-cases photos?
You said they're in touch by e-mail. Is it possible for me to write him?

hernandez, Thanks ;) Yes, I know about the price. But I also heard that they are one of the best in orthognathic surgery business and results that I saw are more than fab. And 3-4 hour consultation sounds very good. Also I read that there are a lot of people coming to them from another country (just like me!) so they must have an experience working with foreign people, just what I need.

Anyway, I got to find a cheaper tickets first. I will need three planes to get to Santa Barbara and one of them stops in LA, so if you have some recommendations about other surgeons in LA or SB - that would very nice. It will be very interesting to hear as much opinions as it possible about my situation, so consultations will be very useful.

I had upper and lower jaw surgery as well as a genioplasty last Friday. My teeth are wired shut and I have a splint in so it is pretty much impossible to breathe through my mouth. I felt like I was drowning 2 nights ago because my nose was so congested. I used some afrin spray which made an instant differencr but you can only use it twice a day for 3 days. Rinsing your sinuses out with saline helps a little but for me it hasn't been enough. My doctor has suggested I take liquid benadryl (antihistamine) to reduce my stuffiness. It can be a very scary but there are things that help.
