I am very unhappy with my appearance and I have been considering jaw surgery, but am nervous considering what a huge operation it is. I have a weak chin (no chin actually, but then I got an implant. It still recedes), a flat cheek area in the front of my face, and a long narrow face. When I relax, my lips hang open, but I only have about 3 cm of excess gumminess in my smile. I have a good bite now thanks to orthodontics, so tooth removal would be necessary in order to reposition the lower jaw. My surgeon seems quite comfortable with the idea but the orthodontist acted like I was crazy because I was willing to go through so much trouble.

After seeing results of people on here and other websites, I have been interested in jaw surgery. My primary cosmetic goals are to:

1. give my cheeks and midface a more defined feminine fullness
2. have a nice little chin and defined jawline without my implant :P
3. possibly shorten and widen it

My chin looks like this from the side with the implant (the first one): http://eng.bkdy.co.kr/photo/photoviewN.asp?pi_img=face_20110521_13_b.jpg&pi_w2=1020&pi_h2=600&pi_etitle=Correction%20of%20Microgenia

Before implant (first one): http://eng.bkdy.co.kr/photo/photoviewN.asp?pi_img=photo_b_face_23.jpg&pi_w2=1020&pi_h2=310&pi_etitle=Genioplasty%20%28Silicone%20Implant%29

My face looks exactly like hers from this angle: http://i44.tinypic.com/2mq29sx.jpg

Actually, I look like Patti Smith from a lot of angles. How can I stop looking like Patti Smith? I have "long face syndrome"/ "adenoid face"/ "mouth breather face"

Sorry for not posting photos of my own, but I wanted to get some suggestions before posting myself up on the internet. Hope you understand. Please give me some advice :)

The day is almost here!
I have been awaiting this jaw surgery since I was 16, I'm now 20 and all of my metaphorical ducks are in a row.

Between battling my insurance company, and making sure my orthodontist was getting my teeth ready for surgery. This process has been an uphill battle.

I have a rather rare condition by the name of Linear Scleroderma, that caused an open bite(will post pics.) The only way to correct my bite is with extensive orthognathic surgery.

I have sought much support from all of these blogs and hope to provide some insight to any/all people who are considering jaw surgery!

[b][i]Any advice is much appreciated!

Ihad lower jaw surgery to correct and overbite just under 8 weeks ago. Initially I could only open my mouth a few milimetres. It has improved and i can now open it so there is a gap between my upper and lower teeth of about 25mm, allowing me to eat, but it is still not good enough. I can't fit large things in my mouth, taking a bit bite out of a burger etc. And not to sound inappropriate, but my personal life in the bedroom is suffering as i cant give oral sex... 7 weeks is a long time and i am getting worried I won't be able to do any of these things again. Will this get better? Some help, please?

Hey everybody.. I'm glad I found this website, I have been trying to find somewhere that others have gone through what I am going through. I was hit in the face about a week ago, and my jaw was broken in 3 places. Just had surgery 3 days ago, had 6 plates put in, as well as 8 screws to hold the 4 wires. Luckily I was able to get a plate on each side of the breaks, so I only have to keep my mouth wired for about a week.. Maybe more, but doc said it should be good by then.. My face is extremely swollen. Like I don't want to be seen in public swollen. I was wondering how long until that should go away?

Another really big concern of mine is facial numbness. Before the surgery the RIGHT side of my chin, my lower lip, my lower gums, and lower teeth were pretty numb.. I could feel a slight pinch as I pulled out a hair on my chin though (which normally hurts like hell). After the surgery I have no feeling in my ENTIRE lower lip, my entire jaw, lower teeth, lower gums.... I can't feel anything when I pull a hair out of my chin now... It gets itchy and tingly though every now and then.... Even though I can't scratch it.. Doc said it could take a long time to have some feeling come back, might not come back at all... Anybody have this problem? If you did how numb was it right after surgery, how far along are you, and how does it feel now?

If you actually read all of this, you are probably dealing with or had dealt with what I'm going through, please, if you can help... I'm very worried, but even if I don't like the answer, I would like some idea... Thank you to anyone who cares to comment.

I'm 7 days post op and although the largest movement was my lower jaw (1 cm) my midface has been in constant significant pain since coming home from the hospital. It feels like someone kicked me in the face with a soccer ball. I feel as if my nose has been broken or something, it's hard to really pin down exactly where the pain is coming from because I still hurt everywhere else, just concentrated there. I wonder if it's where they widened my palette? Anyone else have this much pain from palette expansion? Mine was 7 mm if that makes a difference.

I also received a very minor/conservative septoplasty.

Upper jaw was also moved forward 1 mm and impacted 3 mm.

Any idea how long the pain will last or how to lessen it? Seems like so many are pain free at 1 wk post op. Wish I were that lucky. I tried to drop my pain killers (vicodin/lortab/hydrocodone) to 1/2 a pill every 4-5 hours due to how they make me feel sick. I don't want to throw up anymore. I also day 800 MG Ibubropen every 8 hours on the dot.

I had surgery 10 days ago to fix my overbite they moved my lower jaw forward 8mm. I am healing really well. I have no pain (not taking any painkillers) and it looks like nearly all of my swelling has gone. My chin and lips are still a little numb but I can defiently feel them if I touch them or put something cold or hot near them. My problem is I can't close my lips together without it looking forced & my chin wrinkles up. I asked my surgeon about this and he told me I might not ever be able to because my top lip is a bit shorter then normal :( and he would of had to bring my top jaw up, but said he wouldn't want to do that to me (don't know why my smile is a bit gummy but probably not enough, I show 2/3mm when I smile) I used to be able to close my lips easily before I got braces, it was a bit difficult after the braces pushed my top arch out though, but I think that's because I had a 8mm overbite. I thought the surgery would make it easy for me to close my lips because my bite is correct so my lips should line up? My Otho seems to think I will be able to close them when the nerves and swelling is 100% better and when the splint and braces come out. I hope he is right. I will be so upset if I spent all this money on my braces & surgery then can't even close my mouth properly. Has anyone else had the same problem? And did it get better?

Alright, 8days post op and things are going quite well. Already eating burritos ,French fries, and French toast.

Had my first ortho appointment with Dr, and she said that I will definitely need elastics soon. Great. Just great. I hate rubber bands that stretch from the front of your upper to the bottom of your lower, or vice-versa

So two questions

1. Did you have to wear elastics(rubber bands) after your surgery andfor how long each day and total time??

2. How long AFTER your surgery did you have braces until you got them off! ???(AWESOME FEELING!)

THANKS!

Why do people so have objections to this type of surgery if it's just for comedic reasons?

People will treat you better if:

- You have proper self-confidence.
- You look attractive (eg. great smile/teeth).

The less alien you look, the more people can relate to you (eg. non "weird" looking jaw or subsequent midfaces area) - note that, by alien I don't mean being an extra-terrestrial... :P. I can tell you first hand that even though my case of an underbite doesn't at first-glance look "too bad" it still causes people to treat me "worse" - people can tell there is something "not quite right" above my face and/or smile.

The people in my life, parents, friends and family have mostly been against my decision to have upper jaw surgery, which I'm doing primarily for comedic reasons. I've tried to explain to them that taking a pill for depression isn't going to force me to be confident and that with confidence I can lead a more fulfilled life.

My thoughts as to those who question and even mock people who do this are:

- You don't like admitting to having vanity, which exists in all of us.
- You're ignorant due to not having similar issues or maybe not even hearing about them.
- Peoples ideals and "standards" eg. thinking that it's not "right" to do.
- Religion - eg. God made you the way you are.
- You won't admit that you treat people differently based on the way they look.
- They don't like surgery or had a bad experience which they are taking into account.
- They are "set in their ways". (eg. my parents are like that, at their age!)
- You don't want someone to go through surgery and look better, perhaps because it's "not fair" that they can have surgery while you had to be born "beautiful".
- Jealousy - eg. you would rather remain the attractive person in comparison.
- You're afraid of things you don't understand.

I know some of my points are far-fetched but I was trying to generate a list anyhow. Any thoughts or reasoning you'd care to add to this?

WARNING - This post is practically my life story, so if you get bored with my unnecessary facts… I’m sorry in advance.
PLUS - I'm a teenager and I write like one, extremely dumb sounding. So, beware.

My name Is Megan and I'm 17 years old. I live in Salt Lake City, UT.

My "Jaw Surgery Story" started when I was a little kid. All when I was growing up, my jaw fluctuated in size. When I was four I had a major under bite. When I was 7 my bite was perfectly lined up. When I was 10, my bite was an extremely bad under bite (but not at it's worst point yet). At age 11 my mom took me to our local dentist, trusting in his ability to fix my teeth and man, did we do wrong. He gave me braces to move my upper teeth as far forward as physically possible and moving my bottom teeth as far back as physically possible and gave me a retainer to keep my teeth in such an odd position, and after five years, I looked like a Dr. Seuss character. We didn't know that this was a problem at the time, we thought what he was doing was correct, but he is just a family dentist and I guess he thought that he could squeeze a bit more money out of us by trying to treat my problem that only a professional could fix. He did mention surgery, but he claimed that insurance would NEVER cover it because it's purely cosmetic and it would cost my parents $70,000 so his way was the only way. Cosmetic? None of my teeth can fully touch and I can hardly chew my food. That, my friend, is not cosmetic. The last straw was when I went in to get my braces tightened and he tried to numb me up even though I'm allergic to preservatives in local anesthetics, like Novocain and Lidocain, and did root canals in my front four teeth without even telling me or my parents beforehand. Yes, my front four teeth had root canals but only because my braces forced my teeth in such an unnatural way that they hit each other every time I would talk or eat and cause immense pressure on my front four teeth even when my mouth was at rest. He even put temporary fillings in them and told me they were permanent so when they fell out, I would come back. It was time for a dentist with less issues to deal with my dental woes.

Fast forward to November 2009

I needed to get my wisdom teeth out and I wanted to talk to a professional about my jaw after my dentist gave me root canals without mine or my parent's consent with a nasty allergic reaction following, so my mom and I decided to visit a Maxillofacial Surgeon to kill two birds with one stone. For the longest time I thought my lower jaw was the culprit because my chin protrudes quite a lot but after talking to the doctor, he said it was my upper jaw that needed most of the moving (Forward and down) and a bit of the lower (back). Plus, it was covered by our insurance completely. He works in a building with an Orthodontist next door and they are really good friends and even work together on some cases (like mine), so the doctor took time to take me over there to have him take a look at my ridiculous teeth. He sat me down and almost laughed at how crazy my teeth looked and how bad my dentist truly was. He immediately took my permanent retainer out for free and explained that if I had kept it in for any longer my teeth would have all fallen out by the end of the month. We took tons of X-rays and pictures and as soon as I got my wisdom teeth out, I had new braces put on, called Daemon (Damon?) Braces. Apparently they’re better, but I haven’t really paid enough attention to notice. My surgeon said I had to wait at least a year for my wisdom teeth to completely heal in order to do the surgery, so he did them two christmases ago. He’s extra careful and precise about everything, which is totally awesome. I still have my braces on and my orthodontist did everything in his power to prepare me for my surgery and I was ready to go by may 2011, so my teeth are at their worst point. I can stick my tongue completely between my bite, and it’s extremely noticable. The reason my surgeon waited? I don’t know but he recently got news of a new technology where they make an MRI of your head along with him making measurements in office with a dash of X-rays thrown in for fun, I guess, and it’s extremely precise compared to his previous methods, so I think it was fate that we waited until now to get the surgery. My surgery is August 8th, 2011 so in exactly a weeks time from me typing this post. I will definitely post after pictures in a little while. My family also wants to take a lot of before and after shots from every direction so i might put those up also.
Thanks for reading,

I just woke up, but that's besides the point. In this photo you can clearly see my how close my lips look to my nose because of my upper jaw and you can see how big my chin looks because of my lower jaw and my chin's own natural.. bigness..
