ElizabethAnn - In my opinion, you should wait to have your nose fixed until after the jaw surgery. I recently had upper and low jaw surgery and my nose got a bit wider and slanted. I had no idea my nose would be impacted from the upper jaw surgery. As I saw pictures of other people who had upper jaw surgery, I noticed the nasal base became wider for pretty much everyone. I had to go under the knife again by my orthognathic surgeon to have some septum trimmed in order to make my nose straight again. Again, I recommend you wait until after the jaw surgery to do anything to your nose. Best of luck to you!

I know this post is a little late but Elizabeth I'am in the exact same scenario as you. Excuse me, but im not completely aware of the technical terms, i have a cross bite, terrible TMJ symptoms and I to have a crooked nose that slants towards the same direction my chin points as well. Currently, I'm wearing braces I've had them since August 2011, no surgery date set yet. My two upper pre-molars were extracted and when the extraction gaps closes I will then be ready for surgery which I really hope will be within in this year! I can't wait to have this all over and done with! Please keep us all posted on your journey. I'm so glad Brandon created this website, for a while I felt as if I was the only one who had this problem.

The screws under my eyes are really close to the eyeball, it makes me nervous. I had no idea they were so close. Is this typical? Mine are close to the tear ducts area. I can feel them on both sides. It does worry me because they can come loose. I don't like the idea of having to be extra cautious touching my eye for the rest of my life. I can't even rub my eyes right now, which is something I do subconsciously due to allergies. It's a bad habit I should break, but still. I also get swollen there easily from allergies and also just because I'm a woman haha but seriously, I do have very thin skin in that area. I am very bothered by this right now and if it continues, I may very well consider having it removed. I wonder how bad that operation would be and if it would be similar to the first surgery recovery. I hope not as bad!

@Rachel pain during smiling? How long did it take to subside? My cheeks/upper lip still feels tight when I smile and there is 'slight' pain.

@OP I had a similar pain in my cheek (not sure if it was a screw). My surgeon said it's just my nerves 'interacting' with the new equipment and it can be sensitive for a while. It's still painful when i brush my finger over my cheek, but it seems to be getting better. If it bothers you, you can get it removed anyway. I don't see why not, even if it wasn't painful. I'd rather have my screws taken out but he insists it'll be fine... though I cant see how a bunch of metal stuff will be fine in my head for 40 more years lol.

it could just be swelling but it's worth keeping an eye on it as the screws and plates seem to be the thing that cause the most post op complications.
As for your pain when smiling, I had the same and it will get better in time. You have to be so patient when you have this surgery to iron out all the after effects of surgery. You don't realise how much you use your jaw and face until afterwards. I remember smiling being really painful too but it will take time (as seems to be the answer to a lot of the post op problems!)
All the best with the rest of your recovery

I am 3 weeks post op today and I have had an area right under my right eye that has been very very sore since day 1 post op. When I was really swollen I thought maybe I was just getting a pimple or something as it felt like a knot under the skin. Now that the swelling has gone down in that area, I can tell it's a screw. It's literally right under my eye, so close to the eye that it's actually a bit scary. Do others have screws this close to the eye? Can you feel them and/or does it cause any irritation or pain? It is very sore on me but not necessarily painful. I have only lightly ran a finger across it and it's sore when I do that. I am afraid it would be painful if I touched it any harder than a light brush. I will bring this up with my surgeon when I see him on Monday but would like to hear your experiences. Is this enough to warrant screw removal in the future or is it possible that with time it will feel better?

Also, not sure if this is swelling or the result of another screw, but when I laugh or smile, even the slightest smile, I have pain on the right side of my nose just above the nostril, on the left side. It's puffier than the other side so I'm hoping that's just swelling. It actually hurts so bad sometimes that I have to stop smiling which I would not want to live with forever. I am going to be patient as I know these are early days and odd feelings are bound to occur and everyone is different. If I still feel this way after the swelling goes down, I will definitely discuss with my surgeon.

I recently had jaw surgery (upper and lower) to correct my overbite. My nose has also widened. One nostril is larger than the other. It's been 9 days since the surgery. I hope my nose goes back to being slim.
