Has anyone who's needing/had corrective jaw surgery also have a crooked nose that was related to the position of the jaw? I had a consultation with my first surgeon who insists there is no correlation between the two, meaning I had to have had trauma to the nose... only I have NEVER broken my nose? I noticed the shift in my nose position around the time I experienced the onset of symptoms caused by my jaw position. I have been diagnosed with an open bite and asymmetry due to one side of my jaw being longer than the other. My nose is crooked towards the same side my chin points.

I am 3 weeks post op today and I have had an area right under my right eye that has been very very sore since day 1 post op. When I was really swollen I thought maybe I was just getting a pimple or something as it felt like a knot under the skin. Now that the swelling has gone down in that area, I can tell it's a screw. It's literally right under my eye, so close to the eye that it's actually a bit scary. Do others have screws this close to the eye? Can you feel them and/or does it cause any irritation or pain? It is very sore on me but not necessarily painful. I have only lightly ran a finger across it and it's sore when I do that. I am afraid it would be painful if I touched it any harder than a light brush. I will bring this up with my surgeon when I see him on Monday but would like to hear your experiences. Is this enough to warrant screw removal in the future or is it possible that with time it will feel better?

Also, not sure if this is swelling or the result of another screw, but when I laugh or smile, even the slightest smile, I have pain on the right side of my nose just above the nostril, on the left side. It's puffier than the other side so I'm hoping that's just swelling. It actually hurts so bad sometimes that I have to stop smiling which I would not want to live with forever. I am going to be patient as I know these are early days and odd feelings are bound to occur and everyone is different. If I still feel this way after the swelling goes down, I will definitely discuss with my surgeon.

My surgeon told me after surgery, (after I was shocked how Diff I looked), that this is how you were suppose to look. I don't agree with this, does anyone else? I now look like a totally different person and like I'm not related to the people in my family. Prior to surgery even though I had a slight underbite and noone in my family did, I still looked like I was from my family. For one thing, I don't think my nose would of looked like this at all as it widened with the surgery (upper advanced 6mm).Does anyone agree with your suppose to look like this?

Ok, so I know many people on this board say your nose goes back to normal after some time, and it only looks piggish at first but Im getting nervous because Im pretty sure my nose is going to stay wide forever. It looks as if my nose cartilidge is wider and even if the swelling comes down the shape will still be the same. My surgeon even stitched my nose shut during the surgery but it still widened! I only ask everyone because I hate walking by a mirror and catching a glimpse of my face because all i see is nose. Maybe other people that said there nose got smaller just got used to their nose and couldnt tell the difference anymore. Im not really sure, but any help would be appreciated and I thank everyone for their patience.

I am currently 12 days post-op and I regret having the surgery done.

I know Brandon has said that he doesn't know of anyone who regrets getting the surgery once it's all said and done, but I'm feeling like I will be the first here.

Although, I guess my case is not all said and done yet. I will continue to update.

I've posted pics at:

I will be 18 when I get a double jaw surgery for my underbite next year. I have seen from pictures and my own sister who has already had the surgery two years ago that the underbite surgery will make your nose wider and tilted up more. I already have a major pig nose which has left me with seriously low-esteem. :(

Is it possible to get both the underbite and my nose fixed at the same time?

I am 18 months post-op after having my upper jaw moved slightly out and down to alleviate severe TMJ pain. My facial features, in particular my nose and smile, were very symmetrical pre-op. I was told that my nose might be a bit wider post-op and I would likely have a longer upper lip.

However the surgery also resulted in a severely crooked smile and nose (when smiling). Both slant up on the left side. I had my plates removed a couple of months ago in an effort to regain symmetry, but it has not generated the desired result. My face in repose appears "normal", but severely crooked when smiling. I consulted a plastic surgeon who advised that the jaw/lip stitching was beautiful and therefore not causing the problem. And unfortunately, rhinoplasty isn't an option since it is a static surgery. My nose is only uneven when smiling (it's off by about a 1/4 inch! thus making my smile uneven by about the same amount). He advised that botox could potentially assist in lowering the left side of my face, but I'd prefer a more permanent solution.

Aside from the aesthetics, I am very pleased with the success of the surgery since I no longer have TMJ pain and can once again laugh without discomfort, talk without slurring, and eat steak without jaw popping. However, I am VERY displeased with my appearance now. I previously had a big, beautiful smile and slender symmetrical nose. I am now extremely self-conscience, relunctant to smile, and feel like a distorted Piccaso painting.

Has anyone had this type of side-effect or complication? If so, do you know what caused it and if there's any way to correct it?

Hi everyone!
I'm 18 years old, Asian and I live in the Czech Republic, so please excuse my English.

I am 12 days post op and I'm really worried. On Brandon's blog I read that the surgery's duration was about 4-6 hours or so, but here they told me it would only be 1 hour. They also told me that the swelling would go away in less than TWO WEEKS, which is probably not true, since all the swelling of yours lasted at least for a month. So...have they been lying to me? Or is it some kind of misunderstanding?

I had upper jaw surgery, they moved it forward 7mm. I had an under bite (but you wouldn't notice, only I did) and now I feel like I have a slight over bite. On top of that, I look like a PIG. They did NOT tell me my nose was going to change. They just told me my bite was going to change. Since I'm Asian my nose was already wide and kind of piggy-ish. But before surgery,I had a pretty nose for an Asian...it was thinner than average Asian noses.

Did anyone of you feel that way? Or did they just move my upper jaw a little bit more than they should have? 7 mm is a big deal since I had just a slight under bite.
And what about the nose? Mine looks really bad right now. Please answer, I'm desperate.
Oh and btw I have been wearing braces since I was 15-16.

PS: Thank you Brandon for sharing with us. Your blog is awesome and very helpful. Too bad I didn't google BEFORE my surgery, I hate the way I look right now, mainly because of my nose...and the slight overbite.

Hello everybody!

My surgery is early next day so I just thought I'd add my pre-op pictures before it's too late. My sister took them this morning before I went out.

I'll be having double jaw surgery for my underbite :) From what I've been told; my lower jaw will be pushed back while the upper jaw will be moved forward and also moved a couple of mm's up which will give me less gummy smile.

I used to have a crossbite and a slight underbite. Like my upper teeth and lower teeth used to be right on top of each other.

I'm so excited! The only thing I'm worried about it my nose though, but besides that I can't wait to get this surgery over with.

Wish me luck! And for those you will have jaw surgery soon, good luck to you guys!
I will update after I had my surgery.

So I never thought it was possible to blow my nose and shoot fluid from my eye at the same time! lol Actually it wasn't quite that extreme but when I blew my nose my eye got blurry because fluid started gushing out. I'm assuming tears. It's happened twice now. I wonder if anyone else has sinus issues in general after having upper jaw surgery. I also have noticed since week 3 roughly, after all the blood clots started coming out that I have to blow my nose what seems like a 100 times a day! I'm always plugged up, talk nasally and sound like I have a cold and have lots of phlem stuck in the back of my throat. I know, I know...too much info! But can anyone relate?
