Hi all,

Great site first of all. Lots of good experiences on here.

First, about me. I'm going to be 27 this month and I'm from the USA. My diagnosis is (524.03, 524.11, 524.02) a class III malocclusion - my front teeth rest on top of each other and my back teeth never touch. My lower incisors are actually loose, I get some muscle soreness, etc. because I can't bite correctly. I've had braces twice before (at 13 and at 18) and I was told at 18 that surgery was the only option to fix my issues, but of course my parents resisted it. Now I'm 27 and I'm thinking about going through with it.

My surgeon will be one of the best (Dr. Ochs in Pittsburgh) and I have a friend in dental school that highly recommends both the procedure and the surgeon. But I can't help but feel very anxious. My surgeon has told me that he only needs to work on my upper jaw and that he will use a plate and screws so that I don't need to be wired shut post-op.

I have to decide what to do before the 17th of February (next Friday) because that's when I'm scheduled to get my braces. I can't post pics right now but I can say that cosmetically I look fine. I just can't smile with teeth. My problems are more mechanical than anything.

I haven't seen many posts here where only upper jaw surgery was performed, so that's why I'm posting. Sorry if it's redundant. Anyone have any experience with this type of surgery? The thought of not eating solid foods and being swollen for months REALLY freaks me out. How long will it be before I can be "normal" again? I know this is about the rest of my life so "a few months" aren't a big deal, but to me they are.

Any advice?

Thanks a ton.

Hello,
I am having upper jaw surgery and a vertical chin reduction on Jan 19. I was wondering if anyone has had something similar done. My doctor gave me few details of the recovery time frame and little information of what a chin reduction would involve. I'm having this done on Jan 19. If you could share any information about the recovery process or anything else i'd really appreciate it!

4 days ago I had surgery on my upper jaw to correct an open bite. Before choosing surgery, I had the option of doing a certain type of heavy-duty braces that would correct my bite by shaping my lower jaw. This non-surgical route was enticing at first, but after a few consultations with the docs and residents at the University of Florida's Oral Surgery Department I was convinced to go with surgery. These surgeons explained to me that my upper jaw needed to be moved out and down in a procedure called a Le Forte I Osteotamy. This procedure is relatively minor in terms of jaw surgeries, so I went for it...plus Dr. Louis and her team at UF are the best in the bizz!

I stayed in the hospital for one night, the worst part of that night being the nausea. I actually ended up throwing up blood- just once- but after I did the nausea never came back. The nurse told me it was totally normal because you can swallow a lot of blood during the surgery. I was up and walking around that same night after the nurse told me gravity was my best friend when managing swelling. My pain was very minimal, if any, and on Day 4 i can say that the pain has been the least of my issues. I have only been sore first thing in the mornings, and this subsides as soon as I start to wake up and move around. Aside from that night in the hospital, the hardest part of recovery has been the swelling and seeing another person when i look in the mirror. The swelling freaks you out, and also makes it harder to drink from a glass. Slowly but surely i am opening my mouth wider and wider, and getting the feel of my new bite. My breathing was the worst on Days 2 and 3 because my nose got stuffy, but Sudafed and Saline help alot. Breathing through my mouth, despite having 2 elastics, has been easy. Sleeping the first 2 nights out of the hospital was tough, i probably got 5-6 hrs, but i slept during the day more. Last night I finally got what felt like a full nights rest.

If you have questions about recovering from a Le Forte I operation, or an oral surgery in general, i'd be glad to help!

I'm having upper and lower jaw surgery because my top jaw stopped growing when I was like 12 and my bottom jaw bit to accustom the small top jaw and my mouth and teeth all grew out of place :( so after having braces for 2 years they've given me and under bite. What I'm having done is: my top jaw being tilted to the right, being moved to the left 1mm and being moved forward 6mm, my bottom jaw is being moved to the right 6mm and back less than 1mm just to fit into place behind my top jaw.I'm SO exited! I've been waiting for the surgery for 2 years now (not as long as some people on here) but now I'm 18, nearly 19, It's nearly here! I have to get to the hospital at 6:30am and be preped and everything then I'll be taken into surgery at 8am! Fingers crossed it won't be cancelled, they warned me about emergencies and if someone has to have an emergency surgery when I'm suppose to be having mine done then mine will have to be cancelled and I'll have to go home and they'll contact me when they can fit me in next (that could be months!) But hopefully that won't happen, fingers crossed anyway!

hi guys it is already a year after surgery. I am very happy with the results. If you are thinking about undergoing the surgery, it may be worth your while. It is true that this may be a major operation, and may include a lot of pain in some case. However, I believe in my own case it was 100% worth it. I hope that the information here and on my YouTube Chanel have helped you make your decision and if you have questions about the process please let me know. I hope you have a great day.

Hello,
Has anyone had their upper jaw brought down to show more teeth when smiling? My surgeon says it isnt worth it because my nose will widen and other changes will take place. However, my ortho disagrees as I barely show any upper teeth when I smile or talk.

questions
1) Does this make your face longer since the upper is brought down?
2) Does the space between nose and upper lip get longer?
3) Are there any changes to the upper lip, as in does it get thinner?
4) Does anyone have before/after pictures to show?

btw: I have an underbite. Thank you to everyone who helps out in answering my questions! I really appreciate it!

ok so i had jaw surgery about 3 1/2 weeks ago. my upper jaw was brought down then forward to correct an underbite, they also took out bone from mmy chin and put a screw in and brought my chin forward about 3mm. so as i said my senior portrait date at school has already passed so i was gunna get a local photographer to do them. well i have heard t may take another 4 months to get total feeling back which will put my expected pictures set in december which means no green grass leafy trees or flowers to do outside shots. so i need to know when yall got feeling back. please give me some hpe that it wont take that long!
