I just had upper jaw surgery Feb 04, 2010. I was not able to close my mouth. I forgot exactly but the distance between my upper and lower front teeth had at least a 1/4 inch space and a slight cross bite. I only had 2 teeth touching in the back.

After my surgery my nose was so tweaked, crooked and swollen the first 2 weeks I thought for sure I would have to get nose surgery. Now on my 4th week it has a slight slope and I also have the swelling on my sinus area on both cheeks. I have been staring at my cheeks and nose every 5 minutes everyday. I was extremely worried that I will stay looking like this. When I say worried I mean depressed to point that I didnt want to do anything or get out the house. What also worried me is with my cheeks being swollen along with my lip its makes my face look horrible. My wife says my face is like planet of the apes.

At about my 2 week mark I stopped eating as much and stopped worrying about taking in nutrients for about 1 1/2 weeks because I was in a depressed slump. These last two days I finally started to be more active and more productive all day. I also went back to drinking more protein, fruits, and more nutrients. I Im not sure if its a coincidence but my right side swelling went down quite a bit, still have a lot to go, and all of sudden I have more feeling in my face. All this happened these last two days. Im still worried cause I look so different but im sure it will turn out o.k. Especially after reading so many blogs I now know it can take 3-6 months for the swelling to go away. Overall im excited about noticing the right side finally starting to swell down, even if its just a little bit.

As far as the nose goes it definitely has a slope now. I did have my upper jaw advance 5 mm and the back raised 9 mm. I hope the nose looks the way it does because of the swelling and not the advancement of the jaw. In time I will find out. I just have to keep telling myself its swelling and will go back to normal, nose and face.

Cathy,
I had the same surgery done a couple of weeks ago and noticed the same thing about my nose, not right away (the little neighbor girl actually pointed it out, thanks kid!) but after she pointed it out it seems obvious and now I'm worried about the same thing...will it eventually go down when the swelling does? I don't know, but please keep me posted, as you are a couple months ahead of me in the healing process...

Hi Cathy,

I didn't notice quite as much about my nose, but I've definitely heard similar descriptions from a few other people on here that said things went back to normal once the last bits of swelling went down.

You've probably still got at least some residual swelling, and it can take a few more months for that last tiny bit to go away.

I had upper jaw surgery in December 2009. Nearly all the swelling has gone down except for my nose and sinuses on both cheeks. The top of my nose is slightly turned upwards since the surgery and wider at the bottom than before. Did other people experience this post surgery and if so how long did it take for your nose to return to normal? I know its only minor but it is bothering me and i kinda want my old nose back now.

Thanks

Cathy
