I went to see my orthodontist for the last time today and it was really emotional! It's been a very long journey since I first went to see him back in 2007 but I'm really happy with my results and I can honestly say it has made me so much more confident(more than I ever thought possible). Friends and colleagues comment on how happy I am all the time. I wasn't miserable before but I think I just love smiling now!
He was keen to know if I felt I had been well prepared for my surgery and the recovery and I can happily say I was. I was prepared to wait 12 months before I was fully happy with the results of my surgery but at about 6 months post op I started to really like my new face and adjust to the difference the surgery made.
I knew it was going to be a lengthy process. I knew it was going to take months for the swelling to go away and I knew that the only way to get through the first couple of months was to not give a damn about what anyone thought and just keep looking forward.
My ortho and his nurse both got quite emotional when I was talking about the positive psychological impact the surgery has had on my life and I guess hearing me say it just makes the work they do worthwhile! The NHS get lots of abuse but I've got nothing but good things to say about the way I've been treated. They've been brilliant.
So for those of you who are only a few weeks or even a couple of months post op...hang in there. Soon enough you'll feel the way I do and won't be able to stop smiling!
Unless anything goes wrong in the next year I won't be seeing my ortho and surgeon again for another 12 months. So that's it. I've got my new smile and face and I love it and the way it makes me feel!

Before my surgery...freaky smile!

Hi there all i am considering genioplasty, however i fear that when my chin bone is cut my teeth roots will come in the way as my chin bone (where my front tooth roots approximately finish) is way too small approximately 1cm in vertical length.

Also if my chin bone is cut will there be enough room for the screws to be placed to fix my chin in place.

I dont want an implant as i am too young.

Any experts on the board thank you

I know this sounds very awkward and makes absolutely no sense, but i have a theory that "we" who have jaw surgery are generally more intellingent than average.

Why i think so?

First of all, if we arrived to the decision of having surgery it means we make at least some degree of introspection.
Second of all, our jaw problems makes us understands difficulties, real problems and it gives us a point of view of who "suffers". We are therefore less prone to judge the other since we know what it means to feel "different" and not at ease.
I believe we are more sensitive, open minded and easy going.

I noticed that even after patients had AWESOME outcomes, they stay humble and remain the person they were before because they know how tough things can be for who is not in their position.

I dont know, i probably expressed myself in a really embarassing manner since english is not my first language and there are high chances i just wrote complete crap, but this is what came to my mind at this moment.
lol i hope you dont think im crazy

Hi to everyone, i am about to have my surgery (end of february, start of march?) and it has been difficult to convince my parents who were firmly against it.
one night, very depressed, i wrote a letter to my mom where i really opened my heart and i put on paper everythin i kept inside for months, and it really was a heartbraking letter.

Initially, she was still perplexed but after she read my letter 2/3 times she reflected and agreed and now she is supporting me through this whole thing. My dad too.

the point of all this post isif you are young and you need economic and moral support of your parents, this could be a different way to convince them.
it worked for me.

hope this can be helpful for somebody whose in the situation i was only few weeks ago.
Cheers!

Hey,

I've been visiting this site for a while now and I thought it was about time I contributed.

My next orthodontic appointment is January 26th 2012, this will be a 'joint appointment' with both my orthodontist and my surgeons. I've been informed that this will be the day I am given my orthognathic surgery (upper & lower) date. Eek.

I'm not sure what else to write so if you want more information just ask.

Hey guys!!
So I've been blogging and making videos about my upcoming surgery for about a year.
I'm very excited because I'm finally surgery ready and I'm planning on surgery when I finish this term. I'm seeing my surgeon in a couple weeks and then I'll have a date for surgery.
My bite has changed a ton since I started this process, and the TMJ pain is horrible, but I'm just so excited.

In a nutshell it feels like my whole lower face has been hit by a car; I have a HUGE open bite (I can stick my tongue pretty far out through the hole there) and the only teeth of mine that touch are those all the way in the back. As a result my jaw has absolutely deteriorated; the joints are messed up and don't work properly (when I open my mouth it feels like they pop out of their sockets, then hook back in when I close, and you can actually see the joints doing this if you look at the sides of my face by my ears when I open and close my mouth). This in turn has caused a dull but very pronounced pain in the area of the joints which I can feel 24/7 ; as of last year the pain has gotten worse and has spread to my neck. I am constantly rubbing my face to relieve the pain. The pain has been present for about 4-5 years.

I found out I needed braces and surgery last month. The braces need to be in for 9-15 months before I have the surgery. The braces stay on during and after the surgery and remain there until my jaw is fixed. However, I am moving out of the country in January 2013, and my orthodontist told me that he cannot start the operation because whoever it is that starts the process also needs to be the one who ends it. As a result, I've been told to wait until I am settled abroad and to then consult an orthodontist over there. This means waiting over a year, which I just can't do. The pain in my jaw has gotten so bad as of late that I cannot concentrate on anything else and am CONSTANTLY rubbing my face to relieve the pain. I just can't put up with this anymore, I've put up with it for so long and I'm ready for it to end. The idea of having to wait over a year to get help makes me cry whenever I sit down and think about how far off that is.

I have gone from orthodontist to orthodontist trying to ask about other options. Really anything I can do to tide my over until I can have the braces put on next year. Pain medicine doesn't work nor am I interested in taking it because I don't want to get addicted. I wear a night guard 24/7 but it does not help at all, all it does is prevent me from being able to pronounce words correctly.

Are there any options for me here? I just want to get started on the repairment process; I hate the idea of sitting around for a YEAR and just dealing with the pain. I was reading a little while ago about force mechanics but it looks like those, too, are a 2-year process. What can I do?

Hello. As you maybe know I'm considering going to the US to Arnett/Gunson for a consultation and I was wondering how many times have you seen your surgeon before and after op? And if you had Arnett/Gunson as a surgeons - how did they contact with your orthodontist? Thank you.

I had both upper and lower jaw surgery on January 25th: a segmental Lefort to widen my upper jaw in the back, a BSSO advancement of 5.5 mm, and a genioplasty reduction. The surgery went really well, and I thought I was over the worse bit of the recovery, but....

I woke up on Saturday with my teeth on my lower right side refusing to fit properly in the splint. Even better, I can see that my midline on both jaws has shifted to the right by at least 3 mm. It wasn't like that immediately post op. As you can probably imagine, I am fairly freaking out! I haven't hit myself in the face, or chewed anything so, WTF?

Has anyone experienced a big midline shift in the weeks after surgery? Is it possible that just my teeth are moving around, but not my actual bone? I am going to see the surgeon tomorrow, but I would appreciate some input before I worry myself silly. Thanks.
