Just a few things that my surgeon said concerns me. If anyone can relate please let me know.

My surgeon is moving my lower jaw forward 8mm, and my upper jaw inwards as it kind of "flares out" I automatically move my jaw forward ALL DAY long, because I am so self conscious about my overbite, I have been doing this for as long as I could remember. It does cause severe migranes but I honestly can not move my jaw back where its supposed to go.

So my concern is, once I get the surgery will it appear like I have an underbite since I automatically move my jaw forward. At first the surgeon said no, now he is telling me that its possible. He said he wasn't sure because he believes that I move my jaw forward because its "comfortable" and he thinks there might be a chance that after surgery I won't have that issue.

He did say however that if it does happen there are bands he can put in place to train my jaw to not move forward. Anyone else have this issue???? My surgery is set for 9/21 and everytime I see him its hard for me to even get my bite right.

When the Surgen is talking to you about your surgery. They will say things that you make you feel many different things. I have split these feeling in to two different catigories.

1) Things that CRACK YOU UP
2) Things that SCARE YOU

I have an exaple for each.

Example 1: SCARES YOU
I would have to say their vocabulary scares me silly. When discribing what was going to happen during the suregey my doctor used some "lovely" words. Like "peel". When you think peel, you think of potatoes and cucumbers. So when he said "we are going to PEEL back your gums". To say the least, I was worried. I felt like he was saying, "to me, you are a vegetable".

Not to scare anyone that is about to have this done. It's really not all that bad. I just feel like I should warn you that the doctors do not always have the kindest vocabulary. So if they say something that you don't understand. Ask what it means. Don't be afraid to ask questions. This is your body, you do have the right to wonder what they are going to do to it.

Example 2: CRACKS YOU UP
"You shouldn't loose any weight afterwards." (roflmbo)
I think what they mean to say is "we dont want you to loose any weight". More likely than not you WILL loose some pounds.

So before surgery, shove your face. Don't be dum. But depending on how long your recovery is I suggest you eat what you want while you still can.
My recovery time is 8 weeks. I still have 7 weeks to go.

So do you have any fun stuff to add? Please share. I would love to hear your stories.

I'm on day 6, and I'm still having a lot of trouble sleeping. It's not that I'm too awake to sleep, it's finding the right position to sleep in. Laying on my side I find uncomfortable on my jaw, and laying on my back (which is the most difficult position for me to sleep in) I still have the discomfort with my jaw. I can't sleep with an ice pack either; just doesn't seem to work. I find myself lying in bed rustling through the whole night, not getting a decent length of sleep. It sucks...
Anyone have any advice?

I had upper jaw surgery on June 29, 2010, a little over 5 weeks now. Cant wait to be able to talk normally again. I hope everything goes well. Wish me luck!

Hey guys!

I'm almost 4 weeks post-op and I'm going to completely banded shut for another 3 weeks. I've been straining soups and drinking them with a cup the past couple weeks. I was wondering how easy it was for others to use a straw and if it's safe for me to be using a straw at this point.

My lower stitches and most of my upper stitches have dissolved, though I can't really create great suction yet.

Thanks!

Just curious

My Othro told me that one year after surgery 80% of patients report that they would NOT do it again, but that after a couple of years after surgery 50% report that they would NOT do it again.

I am just wondering if all of this is worth it!?!?!

Just a little background info, I am 27 and I have to move my lower jaw forward 8mm. My Othro thinks I'm ready, so I have an appt with my surgeon next week. I am aiming for surgery late Sept.

I have a job that involves a lot of talking, and luckily I work for the state so I was able to save up a month of paid time off. I figured a month would be enough time, but after reading some of these threads it seems like even a month might not even be long enough.

I live with my bf and I told him I wanted him to take off for the first 5 days, I figured after 5 days, I would be able to take care of myself.

So for those who have had surgery already...would YOU do it again?

I am just so worried about the pain/after care/going back to work.

Thanks!

How did you prepare yourself mentally? I know it may be normal to be nervous. But im terified mostly of permanent numbness!!!! I also have concerns about the pain/discomfort, swelling and of course going under the knife. Is it that bad really? LOL :) Am i overreacting!! How did you prepare yourself and overcome your fears ? any tips ?

Hi everyone,
I haven't posted in awhile because I am still pre-braces and also 'cause I have been really anxious now about the whole process!!! I feel like I just need to talk to a surgeon and my orthodontist still wants me to wait, but I want the surgeon's opinion before I do this whole process. I've been wearing a dental splint 24/7 now for a few months and it's helped as far as minimizing tmj pain and my bite seems a little better to me, but I am not sure how long I need to wear this before braces. I go back to the ortho this Fri after not seeing him for 6 weeks and I am nervous he will tell me I need to wear it another month or two or three. I just want to get this started already! But after reading everyones posts I am so terrified of surgery, even though I know the benefits far outweigh the cons...I just feel like I need answers and still haven't even had a consult from an os. My insurance only has a small list that are in network and my ortho wants to work with docs in my list, but based on info I've found on the internet, I don't really want to work with any of the oral surgeons that are in my plan except for 1, who my ortho doesn't know. Should I just go ahead and make a consult anyway before waiting for the ortho's ok? Sorry for the rant, I am just feeling so anxious and all the ortho says is to wait and see, but I want to know all the details about what exactly I need to do surgically before getting braces for the next two years. I know I need to do this whole process because I hate my smile and when I eat my cheeks and jaws are sore, but I am so scared that part of me wants to just deal with it for the rest of my life without fixing it... uuugh.
Thanks for listening everyone =/
