I am starting this topic after seeing its quite some individual differences between numbness, how swollen you get for how long, and also when the feelings come back.
I came home from hospital yaesterday, very pleased actually. I was swollen, but a lot less than i thought in advance. The doctors said the same.. Today though.. a total new story.. Much much more swollen, and very uneven "swollenness"..So it is a tough day.. I had a very asymmetric face before surgery, so that was one of the things I wanted to fix. I know it will be better, but hopefully it will start so show soon..
Well, over to positiv thinking. The doctors say the worst day will be tomorrow, and then it will turn.. That is actually very quick I suppose, if its true.. I have no rubberbands, and they will take out two stitches in my cheeks tomorrow. In 2 weeks already I am going to remove my outside braces and operation hooks (I normally have the inside braces). So it seems that the process is going quick, but I am a little scared for the nerves and so.. Please send in your experiences when it comes to being swollen and feeling and nerves.. Im a little like a stroke patient, cause I have 3 metal plates on the left side, and only one on the right. I cannot feel my nose, either lips or cheek on the left side.. On the right side I can feel a lot more. The doctors say a couple of more days, and it will start to go down.. But is this true???
I mean, from what I have read in this forum, it can take weeks..It seems unrealistic for it to go down that quick, especially from what I have read here..I dont want to start panic without reason.. If anyone has similar problems, or have had any issues on these subjects during to their surgery, please, I would like to hear from you..

    Hi Annette,

Yes, it's completely normal for the swelling to increase again before it subsides, and the unevenness, I'm sure, is due to them doing more work and metal plates on one said than the other.

Once all the swelling has gone down, I'm sure you'll have the symmetry that you're looking for.

Swelling time can vary big time from person to person, so your doctors are probably right on with what they told you, since that know your specific situation and body.

It personally took me several weeks and months to regain 100% feeling and lose all the swelling, but it sounds like your recovery will probably be much faster.

My swelling got worse and worse for the first week! I am 2.5 weeks post surgery and I am still so swollen. I am more swollen on the left then the right. My cheeks have about 20% more swelling and numbess to go away. My nose is not swollen anymore but the nostrils are still numb. My top lip, and upper lip area is still numb, and so is my upper palat and teeth.

Im 2.5 weeks into recovery as well and the swellings gone down HEAPS considering since the first 3-4 days when i was at max, it goes down little by little each day, Id say i got 10-15 percent to go down, but my lips are ridiculously swollen, its like i got dam botox in my lips and they are so freakishly pouty and I despise them, cause im a guy and aint exactly fun having big lips... makes me look funny.

The mornings are worse for me i find, when i wake up I look like hell, and the swelling flares up again, but then i have a steamy hot shower, and then finish off by cooling my face down with cold water for 30 seconds before finishing the shower and it helps alot, also taking 2 ibuprofen morning and night helps, I don't really take them for the pain any more because i don't have any really anymore but they are probably helping on that front if there is any residual pain. but for the swelling i find they help.

    [b]4 days post op..
Had both upper and lower jaw and chin moved on Tue Morning the 28th. The pain comes and goes, but nothing I cant deal with.. The swelling on the other hand has peaked and now my face and neck is bruising pretty nasty. I have only eaten 3 bowls of soup since Tue .Just everytime i try to eat it dripples right back out. I keep hearing to help with with the swelling to use Ice and also keep hearing Heat packs.. ??????? which would yall suggest. I am beginning to think this is the worse decesion i have ever made. when can i start to see some of the swelling to go go down and at least go out in public and not look so damn nasty for my family.

@Jaheard54, it's only 4 days... you need to have patience with recovery of this type of surgery. Ice pack is best to keep swelling down and put your head up when you are in bed. The swelling won't stay forever, but I would be more concerned with sensation of tingling, burning and numbness even with several weeks passed. Dripping food is quite normal at this stage, it's good to have wet towel nearby when you're eating. I use a tiny spoon and cup, no straw! I never use food syringe. It's just a preference & comfort you have with food intake.

i swear by the food syringe. No luck yet with baby spoon or cup. I'll try that once I have more feeling in my lower lip. It'd be a major fail at this time. I bought a few extra soft wash clothes that I always have with me - cool and damp. The moisture and wetness is comforting. It's my bib and everything at this point. LOL Swelling was worst the first few days around my nose and upper lip. Now it's moving downwards to my lower lip and chin. The lip swelling for me is the worst because my mouth is so small - it had a ton of stretching during surgery. I feel like a National Geographic woman with a lip plate in. Everyday I feel more tingling and increased sensitivity, so all things are well IMO. Very happy so far!

I am ready for my lip to go down so i can at least kiss my wife. When the swellling did start to go down for yall was it a big notice at once or very little each day?
