I'm 6.5 weeks post op from double jaw surgery. At my 6 wk apt, I had my splint removed and the doctor discovered a tiny abscess forming in the lower left quadrant of my jaw near the incision site. He put me back on antibiotics for 1 week, and I go back on Monday to see if it's any better. He said an abscess could be caused from stitches causing irritation or that my body might be rejecting the metal and if that's the case, it will have to come out. I will find out more on Monday but pain and swelling has slightly worsened since Monday, in spite of the antibiotics.

Other screws are really bothering me but I've not really commented much because I'm trying to keep positive and hope they get better as the healing process continues. I realize it takes time. But if my body is indeed rejecting the metal, that might explain the discomfort, pain and hypersensitivity I have with some of the other screws.

I haven't asked my surgeon how long the recovery would be if I had another surgery to remove the metal. He did tell me that if the upper jaw screws and plates have to come out it would require a hospital stay much like the first surgery. Have any of you had to have all metal or at least upper jaw metal removed and if so, how long were you out of work? I was out 4 wks with the initial double jaw surgery.

At 4 wks post op, I had my annual physical and discovered I'm mildly anemic. It's common after surgery sometimes so it doesn't surprise me as I was wearing a splint for 6 wks and diet was really compromised. I'm taking a multivitamin with a strong iron supplement.

Recovery is a very long process that requires a lot of patience. More than I realized... hope things turn a corner soon. At least I'm able to eat more things now with the splint gone!

Double jaw surgery on 12/17/11. BSSO mandibular advancement of 10 mm; two-piece le fort 1 with 3 mm impaction and maxilla brought forward 1 mm.

I'm so sorry you're having an issue with infection and possibly rejection of the metal hardware. That really stinks! I hope it's just an isolated infection and that your body adjusts to the hardware soon.

I will probably need to have my upper jaw hardware removed in a few months to place implants where I'm missing 2 teeth. My surgeon said he could do this in his office under IV sedation and recovery time would be minimal (a few days). I'll share my experience if and when I get to that point to let you know what to expect (if you haven't already had your hardware removed).

Hang in there! Recovery from this surgery really is a marathon.

On 12/28/11 I had a 4 piece LeFort 1 procedure done to correct an open bite.

Damn, that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. I too am realizing how much patience this recovery takes. I mean, I'm only on day 11, but just thinking that I have at least another few weeks on a severely limited diet... and at least another month or 2 after that on a still somewhat limited diet.... I guess it's getting to me because I've lost some weight that I didn't have to lose. I'm struggling to keep every pound I still have.

If you do have to get the hardware out, the one bright spot is that it will be out and you'll never have to worry about it again, or wonder "will I ever have to get this stuff taken out" or "is that a screw I feel?" I know you'd rather avoid a second procedure if you can, but personally I can see the appeal of getting the foreign objects removed from your face/skull.

Besides that how is life without the splint? Noticeably easier to eat/speak right away? Did it change you appearance at all? I still have slight lip incompetence post-op and I'm wondering if I can blame that 1-2 mm of splint or if it doesn't make a difference.

So sorry to hear that you're having trouble! Can't really be of help as my surgery isn't for another few weeks but just wanted to say hope you feel better soon!

Hi Tara, sounds like your having a rough ride at the moment, sorry to hear that. I have read of others having hardware removed and compared to what you have been through it is pretty minor, but nonetheless still a worry for you I'm sure.

This surgery really does test you to the limit, i think we should all be very proud of ourselves for coping through all the trials and tribulations and I'm sure we will all come out of this much more patient than we were before!!?

I hope you get things resolved very quickly and if you do need a second op it doesn't set you back to much, which going by your progress so far, it won't.

    Good luck x

Bsso for overbite on 21st December. Lower advanced 8mm upper impacted by 3mm and moved forward 2mm.

Thank you all for your kind words of support. I go to see my surgeon tomorrow afternoon and I will know more about our course of action then. As for now, today is day 7 of a second round of antibiotics (counting the one right after surgery). Pain started to get worse around 4 days into taking the antibiotics this time and hasn't subsided yet. It hurts pretty much anytime I move my lower jaw (i.e., to eat, do exercises, and sometimes talking). My surgeon has been great and we've kept in touch via text. He had me discontinue mouth stretches for now (and boy can I tell a difference not being able to open my mouth as wide just after 2 days of no exercises), taking ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours regardless of relief, and moist heat applied anytime it gets too painful. In addition to the pain, which the best way to describe it is that it feels as sore as a painful cyst although I don't feel any nodules, is that I am also experiencing extreme hypersensitivity/pain in the roots of a few teeth on that side of my mouth. It hurts to brush my teeth and eating with those teeth. Then last night, I started to experience shooting pains in that TMJ (left side). I'm going to share all this with the doctor tomorrow. The swelling though appears much like it did last week when he put me on antibiotics, only slightly more than the right side.

Still experiencing pain in the screws to the left of my nose when I smile or laugh big. And the screw below my right eye is very irritating and uncomfortable. It's slightly visible and both screws under both eyes can be felt quite easily as they are located in the thin skin area right below the corners of my eyes. I am quite worried about those in the long term, so Olive perhaps you're right, if I have to get the metal out now, there is an upside of not having to worry down the road.

BaliGirl, my doctor mentioned taking the lower one out alone would be a quick in office procedure and minimal downtime much like having a wisdom tooth extracted. He did say if the ones by my eyes came out, I'd have to go to the hospital and the surgery would be quite similar to the first one. I am not sure why mine would be more invasive than yours, but I've seen that some have to go to the hospital and some do the upper jaw in the doctor's office. I don't think the recovery is as long, and I vaguely recall him saying either 1 or 2 wks off work, but that swelling would be similar to the first time around.

I'm getting married in June and have only put a deposit down on 1/3 of the wedding/honeymoon costs. We are actually eloping in Hawaii and having a reception back home when we return. We chose to do this to accommodate my surgery in case problems arose (would suck to lose a bunch of money if I get an infection a month or two before surgery when most get an infection - 12 wks post op!). We are also in the process of saving for a house and want to buy something this summer. So we have a lot going on and I just want to get better soon. I am usually a very active person but haven't worked out since pre-surgery. I'm 7 weeks post op Monday.

Sorry for the rambling post. Thanks again for all of you who are there to provide encouragement during difficult times on the road to recovery. Seems most people experience a few hiccups now and then post-op and at least it's not that bad I guess it could be much worse. I'm really trying to stay positive.

Olive, before I forget, I'm able to eat much more now with the splint out and food is delicious! I eat pretty much anything except raw veggies, nuts, and tough meats. I have eaten salad cut up very small and chicken which surprised me so quickly after surgery. My teeth don't touch on one side so I chew on the other side. It's weird but at this stage, you'll eat anyway just because real food tastes so good and you miss it! I find myself adapting all the time to my temporary "handicaps." It's amazing how resilient we can be.

Hi Bracedblogger, can you tell me what your symptoms were and how your abscess looked like? There is a marble like lump right beside where my wisdom teeth should be where they made the incision, and I'm trying to figure out if I have the same thing as you. I had an infection on this side of my jaw 2 weeks ago but it subsided after 2 weeks of antibiotics. Now i'm starting to worry that it came back.

madeinaday - my symptoms were as follows: I've always had minor pain/discomfort around the screw site but I assumed this was normal so I never mentioned it to the doctor. I actually have some discomfort/pain around all areas where I have metal and that's why I thought it was normal. In addition to that, about 5 wks post op, as I would brush my teeth, I noticed a lot of hypersensitivity and pain around 4 teeth on that side. It has progressively gotten worse. At 6 wks post op, I saw the oral surgeon and he noticed a tiny white pimple like bump inside my mouth at the surgical site. He said it was the beginning of an abscess. At the time, I had not noticed it because I had a splint and wasn't opening my mouth wide enough to see that far back. I was put on antibiotics and over the past few days, the swelling increased on that side and I have had a lot of burning pain in that area. It feels like a dirty wound, a painful cyst, or like something is extremely irritating me under the skin. That's the best way to describe it. When I eat, it hurts the most, I guess because of how I'm moving the jaw, but I am not sure.

I had surgery on Monday to remove the metal on the left lower side of the mandible where the abscess had formed. The doctor ended up removing all the metal on that side because he said that all of it was loose. Apparently, my body was rejecting the metal. Anyway, there is a chance I'll get the rest removed later. I can tell you that this surgery was a piece of cake! I haven't even been taking any pain meds. I was in more pain before the surgery because it felt like something dirty was in my face irritating the heck out of me. Hard to explain but think my face is happy the metal is out so it's healing quickly now. Today is day 3 and I do believe swelling has peaked but it's not that bad. Yes, very noticeable but by the end of 2 weeks, it will be 80% gone. So worth it to have that crap removed!

The screws under my eyes and around my nose still bother me, especially the ones under the eyes. These will require a hospital stay so that's why we didn't go ahead and remove those as the abscess that had formed was an emergency and needed to come out asap. We couldn't wait to schedule the hospital stay which can take time.

I'll keep you all posted on my recovery and please check out my blog for pics and details. Should have those up later today!

    Regards,
    Tara
