I had my lower jaw moved forward 6mm on Wednesday. I am having a really hard time with eating and swelling like most others. I am band complelty shut, and my surgeon told me my orthodontics are so good it would cause issues with getting anything through the straw. I am wondering if anyone else us afraid they are going to mess up stiches by sucking to hard,or struggling to speak?

Also my lip is so sollen it hurts almost as bad as my jaw..I feel like these emds aren't helping at all...when does it all get better?

From a week post-op you'll feel so much better.

I was afraid of messing up the stitches inside my mouth at first, too. The wounds inside my mouth bled for a few days. I'd wake up in the morning with dry blood all over my teeth etc, so I was pretty careful with talking and eating, but I kept rinsing with salt water and kept up with my antibiotics, so nothing got infected.

I tried using a straw about 2 weeks post-op (I was never banded shut), and I think I sucked a bit too hard as I started getting really bad muscle pains on my left side and what felt like really bad earache. Wasn't nice at all.

@lkelley2422- I"m so sorry you're having such a hard time right now. I had my lower jaw moved forward 7 mm and my chin moved forward 4 mm last Thursday so I know exactly what you're going through. Trust me when I say the first week is definitely the hardest and each and every day gets better after that. Today is technically day 10 for me and I just had my first stitch fall out today. My bruising is almost all gone except for light yellowness down my neck but I"m still definitely swollen.

I just went back to eating out of the syringe today after using a cup for a few days because I realized it was taking way too long and too much food was getting stuck in my brackets that way. Try using the syringe as much as possible to get food directly to the back of your mouth to keep your energy up and make sure to do the salt water rinses to keep your mouth clean each time you eat. Also, don't be afraid to talk! I've been talking this whole time and while it does strain my muscles when I do it for too long, it helps keep them somewhat loose and keeps me sorta sane. LOL. Good luck and I hope this helps :)

    Hello Ikelley,

Congratz on having your surgery done :)
Day 4 seems to hit everyone pretty hard, it'll get so much better I promise!

Mouth was so swollen in the first few days, I struggled with anything but water.
For the thicker medicines I used a syringe, I swapped cheeks to stop it aching so much, my other medicine was soluble, so I mixed it with my water bottle.

I was given a cool water bottle in hospital, its got a hole in the side where a straw is placed, so you can squeeze the bottle rather than put pressure on your mouth by trying to suck up your liquids. The nurse said a lot of people try sports bottles too, so maybe have a look for something like that :)

As for talking, the first two weeks I was mostly grunting (I do have a wafer in though), this 3rd week I can be understood a lot better, I can't make any hard sounds, b's and p's are hard, but I'm getting there. My boyfriend tends to understand me better, we are assuming this is because he can translate me when I'm drunk!

It will all get better for you, day 6 was a turning point for me and I felt a little more human and everything was a little easier.

    All the best!

Hey everyone thanks for the encouragement, I broke down yesterday and decided I didn't want to have to be admitted because I hadn't eaten anything. I used the syringe and managed sweet potatoes and regualr ones from kfc. I have been trying to sleep off the naseua as that is still pretty bad.
Kscott I saw your picture of those bottles, I'll see if I kinda find something like it online. Thanks again.

Looking forward to being normal again!

It really will get better I promise, I promise, I promise!
Anything you can get down is a victory and you have to remind yourself of that :)

Get lots of rest and try something thinner than potatoes maybe? Stick with some broth or thin soup. The nausea will pass. Each day you'll be able to eat a little more.
I've been told cycling bottles and sport bottles are helpful too, and I read on here that some people used a freezer bag filled with some food, with an end snipped off, kinda like a piping bag, maybe that'll help?

I was in the same predicament. I couldn't get much of anything through my teeth with the splint and being wired shut. My saving grace was a syringe and catheter tube (which slides into the back of your mouth between your back teeth and cheek. I can eat all kinds of blended soups, mashed potatoes, etc.. now and it's quick and easy. I bought mine from http://www.dinnerthroughastraw.net/ (it's their "Complete Kit" for $15 or so).

It was so depressing to not be able to get anything but KFC mashed potatoes through my teeth, this completely changed my outlook once I was able to eat. Highly recommend it if you have a lot of trouble getting food in because of the lack of space. Also, I've been mute for about six weeks. It sucks but don't worry, it'll get better once you get unbanded/unwired and can talk up a storm. Best of luck, it gets better!
