Hi all, great blog. I'm a 40 year old female who has been dealing with sleep apnea for as long as I can remember. Can't tolerate the CPAP, it's like having a pool filter strapped to my face and since I also have TMJ, couldn't deal with the mouthpiece I paid out of pocket ($1,750) for. Dental wouldn't cover it because it was for a medical condition and medical wouldn't cover it because a dentist did it. First doctor I went to see for surgery basically said to lose weight. That was very disheartening. Like I haven't tried to lose weight, plus I told him I had this problem when I was thinner. I was about to give up, but decided to trek to the next county for another opinion. As soon as this doctor looked at me he knew right away my jaw was not in the right place, my bite was wrong and the x-rays showed my airway to be a tiny sliver. Now just waiting on insurance approval for advancement of both upper and lower jaw as well as moving my chin. Read the individual blogs out there (Roger Arick, Tiger, etc) which have been helpful, but now that this may actually come to fruition, I'm getting a little freaked out. I just remind myself that this will hopefully give me back my life and I can stop falling asleep at work, at functions and most disturbing, when I'm driving. Hope to hear in a couple of weeks, till then I'll be seeing what everyone else has on their minds. Thanks for letting me share.

Hey Sierra, you are not alone. I am 38 with kiddos and considering this surgery. I don't know if it's the right decision but I sure was crazy excited when I found out it could help with my sleep apnea. I've had the cpap for years and haven't used it, I always fall asleep before I get it on. I just went to the ortho last week and he gave me a copy of the picture of my x-ray I did last summer, it kind of puts things in perspective. My airway is between 2 and 5 mm. I guess I'll get through it if I do it, somehow! Good to know there is someone else out there. I'm wearing finishing bands right now, kind of a precurser (sp) to surgery? Hang in there!

I think you must consult your doctor for better assistance. An expert can suggest you the right way in this context. One of my friend is specialist of this, you may contact him.
