I had an overbite, sorry you can't see in the pic. My lower was moved back 4 mm, I believe. Upper 2 mm up. Yeah, that was the day I got my wires off after 4 days. I was so happy to be able to smile again. :)

Wow, that is a very good result. Was your breathing at all impacted?

No, my breathing wasn't impacted. My main problem was being unable to chew properly, having food fall out of my mouth, biting my tongue. Honestly, I didn't even notice how much my bite sucked until I got my braces; it was just part of my life. But I can already see a difference in the bite, and I can't wait to eat solid food again and test it out.

Yes, I was wired shut for four days to get the lower jaw to go where it's supposed to. I wore elastics for about two weeks, and now I just have to wear them at night. In two weeks I see my surgeon about setting a date to get the splint off! Yay!

Has anyone had any trouble with receding gums after upper jaw surgery? I had a bone graft there. I was brushing yesterday and noticed one of my teeth is showing more tooth than before. Is this normal? I've been using a sonicare brush due to doc's suggestion. Before that, I was using a regular toothbrush for a few weeks because he forgot to tell me not to do that. It's kinda weird.

Hi Amber, I was told that after surgery I might need a gum graft on my upper canines and/or first pre-molars (the bone was cut between these teeth). I've had more recession on one of my canines than I would like, so if I had to guess, I will need at least one area grafted at some point. I could be wrong, though - I'm trying to wait a few months for the area to fully heal before I ask my dentist about it.

On 12/28/11 I had a 4 piece LeFort 1 procedure done to correct an open bite.

Thank you, BaliGirl. I was told to be very careful brushing the gums on the upper, because of the bone graft. But yes, I've noticed both my canines are receding, the right more than the left. The problem is I had this surgery right before I was aged off my parents' insurance, and so I currently do not have decent medical coverage to afford anymore surgery. I see him on Wednesday, and I think I'll mention it. I'd at least like to be prepared. Thanks for your post; I was feeling very stressed about this. I literally can't afford any complications.

Just got back from seeing my doc. I will need a gum graft for my receding tooth. But that's in a few months after the bones have healed. But other than that, he says everything looks great. He's gonna call my ortho to coordinate when we'll remove the splint. :)

Good news then. I hope you get your splint off soon. I guess it has to bo very bothering.
