Okay, so I've had braces on for about 5 months now, and everything's going amazing. Teeth are nice and straight, but getting sick and tired of having braces. I surffer from a sever underbite and cross bite, and am very self conscious about my jaw and the way my jaw makes my face look long and that I'm 'pouting' or something all the time. Yesterday I had a checkup at the orthodontist and he changed my wires to one that is alot thicker then the one I had before so my teeth are killing me at the moment but I want this process to hurry up... He's had the appointments booked 6-8 weeks instead of 8-12 to hurry the process along, and I know people are going to say not rush it, and I'm not really, just very anxious to have it done. He said im coming along amazingly, and my teeth shift quickly, but we're still a long ways away from surgery and he needs me to get to the right wire thickness and size. Overall, people who have had jaw surgery or are close to having it, how long did you have your braces on post op? I know everyone's different and some are quick, and some are longer, but he said that most times patients will wear braces 16 months before the surgery. I'm shooting for 10 or 11 months. So I can have the surgery during the summer and not during school time. And my other orthodontist I had (he retired) said that my teeth shift quickly, so I'm hoping it will turn out like I like it? Heres a link that has my before everything photos on it,.. Maybe then u can get an idea? My teeth are MUCH straighter now because of the braces, but u get an idea: http://www.jawsurgeryblog.com/forums/topic/before-everything-photos

Most people here seem to have their braces for about six months on average post op but some have them off as soon as just three months. I was told I would have to have my braces for 18 months pre op but it ended up only being 10 as my teeth moved really quickly. And then I had removed exactly six months post op so it was all done and dusted pretty quickly really.
Your surgeon won't operate until your teeth are ready but you sound like me in that your teeth move pretty quickly so you may well be able to get it done in the summer. It just depends when they're ready though. I don't think there's ever a good time to have jaw surgery!

Hi. I know exactly what you mean when you say you're really anxious to just get the surgery done. I was exactly like that.. I literally cursed my bad genes everyday and I was just so,so self conscious. I knew I had a pretty face, but because of the underbite, I refused to smile and I was so worried about people looking at me from the side. I was just so miserable and I really just wanted the surgery so I could finally smile like a normal person, but I was still growing and every year I went to see my orthodontics he would just say "I'll see you in another year". I hated my orthodontics for saying that, but I was immature and I knew I had to stop growing for the surgery to avoid a relapse. Finally one year when I turned 17 they told me that I stopped growing. Now they told me to book an appointment with a surgeon they recommended so they could work as a "team" to fix my bite. I had to wait another 6 months to see my surgeon. I was so, so frustrated. I finally saw my surgeon, and he said I needed to get my wisdom teeth out first before I got my braces. After about 2 months since I saw my surgeon, I got my wisdom teeth out and I finally got my braces. I was only supposed to have braces on for 18 months, but it ended being 2 and a half years. They told me I was ready for surgery, but my surgeon is a busy guy and I'd have to wait for a surgery date. At this point I kinda just gave up on surgery. I knew it would come, but it seemed so far away. One day, I got a call from my surgeon's office saying that they had a date, but that date collided with my exams and I told them I couldn't.. Yup, at this point, I really did give up. Whatever, I thought. Then, I got another call. They said they booked another date just for me, and it was 2 days after my last exam. It just happened like that, and I had my surgery 2 weeks ago. It still kinda feels like it was a dream, but it just happened so suddenly when I was least expecting it. It'll come before you know it. Sorry for the big rant. I seem to do this a lot, lol.

I had my braces 2 years pre surgery, I'm
3 weeks post surgery and have been told at least a year post-op so it will be 3 years at least
