I was just informed today that although I do need orthognathic surgery to open up my airway due to improper jaw placement, because my bite and teeth alignment are already very good (I had braces as a late teen/ young adult), I actually will not require standard braces. Rather, the surgeon proposed placing a plate of some kind above my teeth to use in lieu of traditional braces (surgical braces?). He was actually astonished to hear how much the braces would have cost me if I had elected to go that route.

If anyone out there has had this procedure done, please let me know how it worked for you and if you are happy with the outcome of your orthognathic surgery. My diagnosis is obstructive sleep apnea (due to the improper placement of my upper and lower jaws).

This is the second opinion I have gotten; the first surgeon recommended orthognathic surgery w/ traditional braces, but noted that they would probably only have to be on briefly (like 2 or 3 months pre-surgery and then 3 to 6 months post-surgery) given my existing nearly perfect bite and tooth alignment. I was actually not expecting to hear that I had this option, so now I am unsure how to proceed. All feedback and suggestions are appreciated.

In your case, I would recommend a third opinion. I haven't heard of the second option, but it may be perfectly fine in your case.

The reason most people need the braces is because even though they may have straight teeth, there are usually at least some adjustments that need to be made in terms of overall position with your post-surgery jaw positioning.

Let us know what you find out, and more details about the surgical braces option if you do go that route, because this is the first I'm hearing of it.

brandon & alyxb: i'm having this on 12/29/10. i had braces from 1990-1994 and then again from 2005-2010. had lots of delays with getting surgery approved, lost jobs, lost insurance, lost newborn son, etc etc. - lots of struggles the last 5/6 years. they took my braces off this summer because i was getting surface cavities. my surgeon will be using arch bars in lieu of braces and surgical hooks. the main goal of the braces is to straighten your teeth as much possible, the surgery will do the rest. so if they say you don't need the braces again, maybe they're right but a second opinion won't hurt.

Hmmm, I was also told that I would not need braces as my teeth are in perfect position already. Previously, I had heard that braces were a requirement but this surgeon told me that I don't need them. I'm definitely getting another opinion. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow, Superflycrazy!

I am getting upper jaw surgery without braces as well . I had braces before and my teeth are very aligned . He recommended I get braces for a perfect bite but he said that without braces my bite will be 90%, which is fine with me !
