I was just informed today that although I do need orthognathic surgery to open up my airway due to improper jaw placement, because my bite and teeth alignment are already very good (I had braces as a late teen/ young adult), I actually will not require standard braces. Rather, the surgeon proposed placing a plate of some kind above my teeth to use in lieu of traditional braces (surgical braces?). He was actually astonished to hear how much the braces would have cost me if I had elected to go that route.
If anyone out there has had this procedure done, please let me know how it worked for you and if you are happy with the outcome of your orthognathic surgery. My diagnosis is obstructive sleep apnea (due to the improper placement of my upper and lower jaws).
This is the second opinion I have gotten; the first surgeon recommended orthognathic surgery w/ traditional braces, but noted that they would probably only have to be on briefly (like 2 or 3 months pre-surgery and then 3 to 6 months post-surgery) given my existing nearly perfect bite and tooth alignment. I was actually not expecting to hear that I had this option, so now I am unsure how to proceed. All feedback and suggestions are appreciated.
