I haven't had surgery yet either, and I'm also really concerned about nerve damage. My surgeon told me that almost no one who has upper jaw surgery will recover feeling in their palate, but that most aren't bothered by and get used to it. Is there anyone on here that has had upper jaw surgery and DID get feeling back in their palate? just curious.

yes, I had upper (and lower) jaw surgery and 13 weeks ago and have the sensation back in my palate and gums now. I have a friend who had upper jaw surgery too and she has no reduced sensation anywhere. After surgery only one in ten suffer from any permanent reduced sensation which is usually minor and causes no incovenience at all. If you're having palate expansion or reduction I guess the risks of permananet numbness are hgher but just with normal upper jaw surgery, all the sensation should return

Elliemae - i am contemplating surgery and have been for some years now. what was holding me back initially was nerve damage since i already have had experience with this after wisdom tooth extraction. now that i have renewed interest they"re telling me bascially I'm too old (55) and i will relapse because instable tmj. it was my understanding that people got this surgery as a possible solution to tmj. My question is do you have any permanent nerve damage or chronic pain issues? Thanks i hope you see this post?

My oral surgeon is very experienced. He's quite old as you'd imagine and has been practicing since the 1960's. He came to me minutes before the anesthesia was given and told me I could greatly reduce my chance of nerve damage if I allowed him to make two small incisions one on each side of my lower cheek by the lower jaw line. I agreed to it and the incisions are small, about 3 millimeters or less on each side, thin as a blade and almost unnoticeable. I had upper and lower jaw surgery for under bite and cross bite. I could feel my lower lip the next day and my surgeon says all my nerves are intact. He says if I didn't allow him to make the incisions it makes it harder to see where he is placing the screws so it would increase my chance for nerve damage. I can deal with a small blemish over not feeling my lip. I have the usual numbness as every one does. It's sort of like the pins and needles feeling that I experienced after a liposuction where the nerve fatty sheath was removed and grew back.
I would recommend asking your surgeon about this.
