Asymmetrical face after surgery

    Hi all!

I'm 18 and had surgery for an underbite done three months ago. All the swelling and bruising is down now (yay!) and my jaw has stopped clicking every time I chew (double yay!). My skin's still a little yellow and pimple-y from steroids in the medication, but hopefully that goes away in a bit :)

My problem is now, even with all the swelling down, my face still looks quite asymmetrical. I used to have a fairly round face, but now the right side of my face is noticeably smaller than my left. In short, I kind of look like a big capital D :P My chin also juts out to the right as well, and my surgeon recommended shaving down the bones for it...

So my two questions are: Did anyone else feel like they had an asymmetrical face after their surgery? Also, has anyone else ever had their bones shaven down, specifically on their chin? If the recovery for it isn't too bad, I *might* consider doing it. Otherwise, I really don't want to get cut open again XD

    Thanks!

Hi Becca, great to hear your jaw problems are all better. Can I ask what medication you're still taking three months post op? If it contains steroids they can make you quite puffy in the face anyway so could be causing the problem. Your skin should't be yellow three months post op. It could be the meds affecting your liver. I'm surprised to hear you're still on meds to be honest as taking them for three months is not good for your body and you shouldn't be in any pain by now. I'd speak to your doctor about it and see if you can change to something that your body can handle a bit better

Becca, I'd wait a full year before doing anything. I know you think all the swelling is gone, but it might not be. As my surgeon explained it to me, when they do the right and left sides, they are practically to completely seperate surgeries, and can heal at different rates. Also, I would suggest getting an opinion from a different surgeon. Second opinions are important when your talkin about surgery.

    Thanks for the replies!

@Rachel: Sorry, I didn't mean I was still on meds. I thought I might be experiencing the after-effects on the medication, even three months later. Hmm... Well, it could just be that I haven't been exercising as much after the surgery (I think the last time I had a really good workout was four months ago), so I look a little unhealthy :P

@Bobby: Thanks, I think I might just wait a year. I'm probably just too impatient! ^_^ My cousin had the same surgery as me, and he looks quite good now, though it didn't look good until a year later. I'll go see if there's another surgeon in my town to see what he/she thinks.

    Thanks guys!
