Hi! I'm in the beginning stages of my jaw surgery journey, just met with the orthodontist this morning, getting fitted for a splint, following with braces in preparation....

Anyone have any experiences with BCBS HmO? or Harvard Pilgrim? Anyone familiar with their policies regarding corrective jaw surgery?I could use either and want to try my best to get the surgery covered.

I have a diagnosis of jaw asymmetry due to the right side of my jaw being longer, so my jaws tilt upwards left... also an anterior open bite.

    Thanks!

Welcome ElizabethAnn, this is the first I've heard of either of those programs, are they country-specific or state-specific or what? Where are you from? Maybe other people in your area will have more information...

I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

@Brandon - Harvard Pilgrim is a health plan in New England and BCBS = Blue Cross Blue Shield.

ElizabethAnn - Do you live in New England? There are a lot of great health insurance plans in New England, especially in terms of covering jaw surgery. While I don't have experience with either insurance, I've heard that both are good in covering jaw surgery. I did have Harvard at one point but that was before my jaw surgery. I took a look at their policies because I was thinking of getting the surgery and at the time, it did say that corrective orthognathic surgery was covered. Tufts Health Plan is another good plan. I've never had any problems with them. In fact, they've been amazing, but so was my surgeon in making sure I was covered. Your surgeon's office should be able to help work with the insurance to get you covered. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies and info! I am currently covered under BCBS in Massachusetts under my Mother's plan, which I am still eligible until I'm 26. I also have the option of picking up Harvard Pilgrim through my current job at the beginning of the next fiscal year if I need to. A woman at my orthodontist office told me that coverage is very rare, I am definitely going to ask my jaw surgery coordinator which they have had the best experiences with. The thought of not being covered is really weighing on me. The whole process is stressful enough! I am terrified of proceeding and going into braces to find I don't have coverage for the surgery!
