hi all, since left to right asymmetry is less common, i definitely wanted to put my results out there for those who might have a similar problem. let me know if you have any questions!

i am doing great now three months out, after having a somewhat rough period with an infection. i had double jaw surgery (BSSO and lefort I) and some shaving on one side of my lower jaw bone. i did not have braces in conjunction with my surgery. please see this post on my blog for the before/after pics: http://mycrookedjaw.blogspot.com/2012/01/prepost.html

thanks to everyone for your support, whether through a direct reply to me, or just by being here and sharing your own story, which comforted me and made me feel part of a community during this process. :D

hi kevin, thank you sir! yes, i am so much more confident now. for a while i felt a little disappointed that my face didn't miraculously become 100% the same from one side to the other, but then i realized i needed to smell the freaking roses. :D i am very happy at this point and satisfied. my teeth feel so much better with less stress on the one side. and i don't dread having a picture taken of me now! :D

do you know if you will have the same procedure yet?

keokeo, can i send you some photos of my jaw and get some advice from you? i have nearly the same condition and have a few questions. it's hard to find someone w/this type of asymmetry, and my lower jaw cants a lot like yours. i've gone back and forth on surgery a lot, but it'd help if you can give me an idea of what i may have in store for me. thanks!

    Hey keokeo,
I have similar problems to you. Would you say your surgery was more for functional or aesthetic reasons? Also, did you notice any nose changes? Like did your nose get wider?

also, I have never heard of a case where orthodontics weren't needed. Lucky you!

it was for both function and aesthetic, but i kept the aesthetic part more to myself and focused on the function for coverage reasons (which almost didn't come through btw). i haven't noticed any nose change at all. yes i was def lucky on no ortho needed. my teeth are actually a little slanted now because they were made to be straight before on a crooked jaw, when i had braces as a teen. and now since that the jaw is straight, the teeth are a little off-kilter, haha. but it's too small an issue to be worth fixing.

    Hey,
You look fantastic! It really has made a huge difference.
I've just spent hours searching for someone with the same problem as me - seems to be very uncommon - but my face on the left side is much lower and slanted than the right. My teeth are ok but they touch on one side and not the other which means I've worn a tooth down loads from grinding. Attractive!
Did your insurance cover the surgery? Just wondering the cost. I live in the UK and I doubt the nhs would cover it so would need to get it done privately.... No idea how much that would cost. Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

hi jen, thank you! my surgery was about 51,000 USD including hospital costs, anesthesia, the procedure itself. more including the pre/post check-ups. :/ insurance did cover it, but my first insurance company denied it, citing that my complications were not severe enough. luckily i switched jobs and my new insurance did approve it. i actually ground down my teeth (my canine in particular is half gone) on one side like you!
