In my case (I have an underbite) I was told 1 year Pre-Surgery and 1 year Post-Surgery... however I am now 1.5 years into braces and haven't had surgery yet. My orthodontist says I'm unlucky in that my teeth move very slowly. In most cases you might just have braces for a year before surgery, but if you're anything like me you might be looking at up to 2.5 years of braces before surgery and then maybe 1 year after... but yeah, that'd be pretty unlucky (like in my case).

I had my braces put in April of this year end of March and then ive had them on till now, getting surgery Oct 4th and braces will probably stay on 4 months later. Ive heard of people just having braces on for four months then surgery and another month after surgery so 5 months tops.

I also wanted to mention that its not good for your teeth to move to quickly because you can cause root damage to the tooth and then have your teeth literally fall out and have receeding gums and gum decay. Scary stuff, Ive seen a you tube where a womans ortho made her teeth move too quickly and she needed gum grafts done! When i had my wisdom teeth removed all four of them for the surgery it was before my braces were put in so was in March anyhow my jaw surgeon told me that she didnt want my teeth to move too fast because its not good for the root. She said 8 to 9 months after. She was pretty much right. Ortho said I was ready for surgery this September, because of surgery schedueling and there are other patients before me, they gave me the date for Oct 25th however, I called back and asked them if they could push it earlier, so they said they had a spot for the 4th but needed an attending surgeon for that day along with my jaw surgeon. Luckily they called me back and said they got the surgeon and I was good to go Oct 4th. Im excited and would have the surgery tomorrow if I could, now I have to think about buying ensure and boost and carnation breakfast instant whatever its called lol. Im gonna buy a lot of gatorade and icecream.

What jawbreaker911 says about the fast moving of the teeths it's right, I'll try to think about it next week at the ortho consulation when the ortho tells me I must wait at least 2 more months ... :) Maybe it will help me to cope better the situation ...

Update: In my case the ortho said 1 year before, and 1 year after. The surgeon said from 8 to 10 months before. The last time I asked the ortho he said from 6 to 12 months after ... They are always changing! I ended up being ready for surgey after 6 months, but I still don't have a date for surgery, so I'd probably have my pre-surgical braces about 8 months before surgery.

hey, I ended up having braces for two and a half years before my surgery, and then after my op I got them off after 8 weeks, so I guess it just varies, from person to person and what the orthodontists and the surgeons think is best
