Ok so I have an overbite, and it's quite severe and my lower jaw looks so undeveloped and receded... I live in the uk, so im with the NHS, I am 17 and I really want the surgery, it seems like it would help me a big deal considering I struggle with my appearance, i currently have braces and I was wondering if I mentioned it to my dentist he would be offended and if he would even referr me? And what should I say to him?

Can I get surgery?

I'm in the UK and have just finished my treatment on the NHS. The way I went about it is that my dentist referred me to a private orthodontist who then did measurements etc which showed that my underbite was severe enought to have treated on the NHS. I was then referred to an NHS orthodontist and surgeon, it took about 6 months before I got to see them and then another year before my treatment started but I'm now post op and my braces are off. And I love my new profile!
You're still pretty younfg and going by your username you're male so probably have some more growing to do. You MUST be fully grown before you have this surgery (usually between 19&21 for men) Your surgeon can check if you're fully grown by doing an xray. But it's worth getting the ball rolling now as you'll need your teeth to be prepared for surgery with your braces. If you already have them then I don't see why you can't put together a long term plan with your current orthodontist. Beware that it's a loooong process (4 years from start to finish in my case) but my biggest regret is not having it done sooner (I'm now 34) so get yourself referred so you can get on a list and get your treatment as soon as you're fully grown.
All the best! It's the best thing I've ever done!Posted 6 months ago # -
I'm also in the UK and my dentist referred me to the dental hospital and wrote a long letter detailing everything that needed to be done- he did some training in maxi-facial but decided to just be a dentist. I then was seen within 3 months and that was when I started my orthodontic treatment and they did plans for the surgery as well. At the end of the day if your bite isn't right then you are eligible for surgery- I had an overbite and had surgery a couple of weeks ago and they moved the upper jaw up by 5/6 mm and then the lower jaw to meet the upper so 4/5 mm I think and then he also did something to my chin as well. So it is worth asking as it is straight forward for your dentist to do.

Don't be worried about offending your dentist. Get the ball rolling while you are young. You don't want to go through life feeling self conscious of the way you look because of your bite. I'm 40 and getting surgery in 2 weeks and so wish I had done it 20 years ago. Good luck
Bsso for overbite on 21st December. Lower advanced 8mm upper impacted by 3mm and moved forward 2mm.Posted 6 months ago # -

I am also in the UK. I never even had to mention being reffered, i was just told i was being and then i was placed on a waiting list.I'd hurry up and get yourself on that waiting list.
Plus, the fact i had to have my wisdom teeth removed meant my gums had to heal for over 6 months (i was getting them taken out before i decided on surgery, but the surgon said they take them out anyways) so yes, get the ball moving.
I don't see why he wouldn't refer you, just ask to be.
i'm 19 and was first told about my operation when i was 14.
