Can surgery fix jaw asymmetry?

Hi Melvyn,
Who diagnosed your jaw asymmetry? Is it that one side is literally longer than the other side, or is it just slanted diagonally, so that one side juts out farther than the other?
I'm asking because I had a diagonal slant too, that made mine seem the same way, and yes, it was fixed during surgery, along with the more standard front and back movements.
The best thing to do is set up a consultation with a nearby surgeon or orthodontist (usually free for both), and they can tell you for sure, but I'm almost certain it can be fixed.
I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

Hi brandon,
I got it diagnosed by a local oral & maxillofacial surgeon in singapore, i had the x ray taken and it seems like the right side of my jaw is literally longer than the other way. visually it looks like its slanted to the left side and from my pictures taken at the frontal view, its clearly my jaw is asymmetry. on top of that i have a slight overbite and uneven bite too, my upper jaw and the lower jaw do not fit properly at all.
Can i ask you a question regarding the surgery? for a jaw asymmetry like my case,do the surgeons take out any extra jaw bones on fixing that?
Regards

When you had the X-ray taken, did the surgeon make any comments or suggestions?
For mine, I had an asymmetry and pretty severe underbite, so yes, they had to remove some of the jaw bone to shorten it, then bolt it back together in the correct position.
I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.

hi brandon,
its really nice to hear from you again, thanks so much for answering all my enquiries :) .
when i had my x ray taken , what my surgeon suggest was that he would have to cut the upper and the lower jaw(he said my upper jaw was crooked too),rotate both the jaws and shift it to the correct position.Regarding the jaw surgery cost, how much did u paid for the surgery , and how long
did u had the braces on before the surgery?
And regarding the post surgery, did you experience any side effect or any discomfort?Regards

No problem, Melvyn, glad to help!
Your surgery sounds like it would be similar to mine, except only my top jaw was crooked/slanted.
As far as the cost, you can see a breakdown of what I paid here, just remember that it can be very different from person to person based on a number of factors:

I personally had braces on for a little over a year before surgery, and then a little over a year after surgery.
After surgery, I definitely experienced discomfort and pressure, which is to be expected with any major surgery, but I was lucky to not experience any actual pain throughout the whole process. The first few days after the operation are the most challenging, while you adjust to the swelling and saliva build-up, etc., but the hardest part is over before you know it.
If you have any other questions, just keep 'em coming!
