Dear friends,
My daughter is going to have double jaw surgery next Thursday. She has class III under-bite. Her surgeon suggest to shorten her chin at the same time as the surgery. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Regarding blood needed for the surgery, the surgeon suggest to reserve 2 pint blood. My daughter has drown 1 pint from her self last week and we short of 1 pint. I'm going to donate 1 pint for her, but mine may not be good. any idea how much blood really needed for the surgery.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
Lynn

Surely the surgeon should know this information?!? I had double jaw surgery last week and it wasn't something I ever had to worry about as it was all dealt with. Unless your daughter is a very rare blood type then the hospital will have all the blood they need to use both during and after surgery.

Thanks RachelM. Did you use donated blood? How do you feel now?
I have read one post that the girl feel her chin was too short after the surgery. That make me start debating we should have it done at this time or later.Posted 11 months ago # -
Hi Lynn, They used blood from the blood bank (donated blood). It's not something I really thought about as I just naturally expected blood to be available if I were to lose a lot during surgery (which I did). I'm in the UK and unsure where you are so it might be done differently there! I didn't have my chin shortened, just my bottom jaw shortened and my top one extended along with lots of other adjustments. I'm pretty happy with the result so far but it's still early days with lots of swelling and bruising! I'm guessing it they're suggesting getting the whole thing done in one go it might be a good as it's major surgery and good to get all over and done with but that's just my opinion. The final decision is down to your daughter.

Hey I had underbite surgery where my surgeon offered to shorten my chin as well. I decided to leave my chin because I wanted a strong jaw line so its really up to what your daughter wants. She should discuss with the surgeon what it would look like with and without the genioplasty.

donating own blood is suggested when there is a high probability that someone is going to loose a lot of blood during surgery. it is not recommended as a general measure. (a friend who is anaesthesist told me recently).
anyway, most people who undergo bimax-surgery don't need additional blood. in my case, the chin was reduced and both jaws were moved and the lower jaw got a segment cut out and moved. but no additional blood was needed. maybe there is a special reason why severe blood loss is expected in your case?34-old male, Switzerland, both jaws, chin reduction, correction of overbite and segmental osteotomie, surgery on June 7th 2011

Thanks all for shearing.
We are going to review her X-ray,model,image with her Surgeon next Monday. We will then decide.
RachelM, how many pins did you use?Posted 11 months ago # -
I have no idea how many pins and plates I have in my face as it's not something my surgeon would tell me unless I asked her. So long as it doesn't fall apart I'm sure it'll be fine though!
I've never heard of being asked to donate blood prior to having surgery. My sister lost loads during abdominal surgery a couple of years ago (as was expected) and was never asked to donate any beforehand.Posted 11 months ago # -
I had double jaw surgery 3 months ago and I donated a bag of blood for myself because I didn't want a transfusion. They ended up throwing it out because I didn't need it. I think one bag will be fine.

Thanks for your ideas/comments. We end up have only one unit (pins)donated from herself. Hope she does not need more than one.
