Cost of Jaw Surgery... a lot less?

So today I went to the oral surgeon and asked him about my case/the cost of jaw surgery (I didn't ask him too much about jaw surgery, because the visit was for my wisdom teeth surgery) but he said I wouldn't have to be wired shut, and they would probably only operate on the lower jaw. My underbite isn't so terrible but you can notice it. He mentioned it would be around $5,000-$9,000 and I was surprised because I usually heard the surgery was around $20,000-$30,000 w/o insurance. Do you think the $5,000-$9,000 includes the hospital fees or not? Or is this price separate? Why is the cost lower than I expected?

    Hi there!
I would suspect that it does not include hospital fees. The way my costs are breaking down is essentially this: $4500 for lower jaw, $4500 for upper jaw, $9,000 for hospital facilities (surgery room, meds, overnight stay) and $2,000 for anesthesiologist...
    Hope that helps..

I would also guess that those figures do not include your hospital expenses. Thankfully, I have insurance because my double jaw surgery broke down like this: My surgeon cost $16,5000 and the two night stay in the hospital (including anesthesia and all that junk) was about $21,000. Also, my surgeon was assisted by another very experienced doctor and I haven't even asked my parents how much that added onto the tab.

So, I can see that the cost does vary a lot, but that's my two cents, anyway. Before I had the surgery, my surgeon was thinking about just doing one of my jaws instead of both and he told me that by doing both jaws, you don't really double the cost of surgery, it's actually closer to tripling the cost. (His words.) Of course, I wasn't worrying too much about cost. I just wanted it done right.
