    Hello all,

Just found this site, and it looks like a good one. Thanks to Brandon for putting it together. It is nice that all of us dealing with the jaw surgery can find information in the same place.

Anyways, couple questions. I get the upper and lower jaw surgery this Thursday (November 12th, 09) in Vancouver, BC. It is definitely not as complicated as some of the bite corrections described on here, but we're all in the same boat :-)

As far as the eating part goes...what do you all recommend for this? I am 6'2, 185ish, with a quick metabolism, meaning the weight will probably come off pretty quickly. Any tips on getting the calories/vitamins/nutrients in the body for the first 3 weeks or so?

How quickly were you all getting back to university/work/etc after the procedure? It sounds like more of a physical appearance (swelling, bruising) that is keeping most at home for the first couple weeks...any comments on this?

Thanks for your time all, have a good one!

If you've seen my bio and videos, you can see that I dropped nearly 20 pounds in the first 5 weeks after surgery, and I had a similar build: 6'3", 190, with a high metabolism.

It's going to be tough, but if I could do it over again, I would have drank even MORE Ensures and/or protein shakes than I did. Also, I took a powder multivitamin, mixed in with my drinks once a day.

Yes, I agree that after the first couple of weeks, the physical appearance is much more of an issue than mobility or functionality, so as long as it doesn't affect your work, you should be fine after 2-3 weeks.

I have not seen the videos/bio yet, just discovered your site last night.

Thanks for the tips on the Ensure. How many a day were you drinking? I am trying to get a good grip on the daily intake of food/liquids that should keep SOME of the weight on, as well as getting the daily nutrients/vitamins.

Were you blending any whole foods in the blender like some people who have these blogs online? IE: hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.

Lastly, in terms of consuming the foods, was it just with a syringe? I liked the idea of those Zip N Squeeze bags, but it seems the company has fallen blown up, maybe a scam? Any ideas on consumption?

    Thanks again! :-)

No problem, videos are here: http://www.jawsurgeryblog.com/category/jaw-surgery-video-log/

And bio, including before and after shirtless pics are here: http://www.fitbuff.com/about-fit-buff/

I would usually drink one or two Ensures, plus one or two protein shakes and/or full meal replacement shakes from Vitamin Shoppe (like GNC, but usually cheaper).

I didn't do any of the full blended foods, but I've seen other people that liked them. I just never tried it. The closest thing I did to this was add water to peanut butter. I added just enough to liquify it enough to slide through the syringe. It sounds kind of gross, but tasted surprisingly just like regular peanut butter, which is a welcome salty treat, after all the sugar-laden juices and shakes.

Yes, I just used a syringe, and it worked well for my favorite snacks of applesauce, yogurt, peanut butter, etc. I didn't hear about the Zip N Squeezes until I was done, but they looked awesome, and I would have gotten one if I had know about them sooner.

I'm not sure if they are still in business, but it would definitely have made it easier, since you can fit more food in the bag for a continuous squeeze.

I had to suck the applesauce or whatever into the syringe, squirt it down my throat, then repeat several times. With the bags, you could get a lot more at once.

What did you guys all find out in terms of the amount of swelling and bruising to see after the operation? I am currently at day 5, and am without any sort of pain. The swelling is massive though, and the bruising is starting to come on a ton.

How long till you all saw some soft foods/relief in the swelling and bruising?

I am focusing on the end goal of that million dollar smile, so all this recovery isn't a big big deal to me, but it is nice to know.

    Thanks all,

    Justin :-)

I was still massively swollen then too, for weeks, in fact, as you can see here:

    http://www.jawsurgeryblog.com/category/jaw-surgery-video-log/

My bruising was bad too, with the yellow extended all the way down my neck to the top of my chest.

I didn't eat/chew anything at all until almost two months after surgery, but I was wired shut for 5 weeks.

It's great that you have that positive attitude, because that helps a ton in situations like this, so keep it up, and you'll have that million dollar smile before you know it!
