Hey guys
Today is day 6 post upper jaw sugery. I have a couple of questions and would very much appreciate it if anyone can answer them. The first few days were terrible that I was regretting having the surgery and I still go through that thought once in a while but it has gotten much better. I am not banded shut but have been wearing rubber bands and for some reason they feel extremely tight today? is that normal? I am not in pain but its very uncomforatable and i feel like I am so pressurred around that area. Also my swelling has reduced but I still have quite a bit around my cheeks and my chin. My roof of my mouth has sensationg when i roll my tongue over it but it is sill numb is that normai? I have no feelings on my upper gum, is that normal???I feel extremely tight aroung my front gum area and its gotten me all worried. Other than that I was on cler liquid so water and gatorade for 5 days. Moved to ensure(not a fan), yogurt drink and chicken broth this weekend. I pray that my recovery speeds up. I want to be able to feel and see my face again. I am still numb on most of my face. I have moved from icing to warm water bottles on saturday. Can i rotate back and forth from icing to heat to icing etc? Any thing other than that i can use for swelling??My lips have peeled so much and they burn I use vaseline blistex constatnly but still no help. I have so much cuts and bruises inside my mouth from braces. I just want it to get better soon.

I am not sure as to why your rubber bands would all of a sudden feel too tight. It might be that you are wearing them wrong. There is no reason for the elastics to become tighter.
The swelling is perfectly normal, it takes upto six months for it to be COMPLETLEY be gone. By week 2, a lot of your swelling will be gone and people that didn't know you pre-op won't notice that you went through surgery because you'll just look normal. But obviously you and otheres who know you well will be able to tell the puffiness.
The numbness of the roof of your mouth / teeth and gums is normal as well. The feeling will slowly come back with time. The "tight" feel you get is nothing to worry about, because you really aren't feeling anything at all it's just a sensation you have (your upper gums / teeth are numb.)
If you aren't wired shut, do some jaw exercises after you to your warm water bottle massaging because that's when your jaw muscles will be most relaxed. Try opening your mouth with the rubber bands on and fight the rubber bands a bit even if it hurts (not to the point where you can't take it anymore or you feel like your jaw is going to rip off.) If you don't, your muscles will get stiff. Also do jaw exercises before you brush your teeth, with the rubber bands off but go easy. Once you can fit a spoon in your mouth, move onto semi-solid foods such as apple sauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc, and you will be very satisfied versus the all-gatorade diet. Drink vitamin waters as well.
I'm sorry to hear about your cut up lips, personally I just put on a LOT of vaseline and I'm not sure what you can do if that fails you. The first seven days are supposed to be the worst, but it'll all go up hill from here! Hang in there I promise you it'll get better and you'll be better in no time :)All the best!! xx
