Hi i am Jaime and i am 18 years old. i am due to have jaw sugery but i am really bricking it....

All I want to know how long is the operation and how long does it take to recover. I have had braces on for about a year now and i still haven't got a date for my surgery, which i must say is a little annoying.

I have even had my wisdom teeth taken out so that the surgeons would be able carry out the procedure!

I dont think i have ever been so scared about anything in my whole life and I am still debating whether to go through with it, but im scared that if I don't I will be spending the rest of my days wondering what if?

I have watched the videos that Brandon has and I think that i have scared myself even more now :( Is it really as painful as it looks????

please guys just a bit of advise on which road to take.

    Thank you x

P.S. I am REALLY REALLY scared

    Hi Jaime,

I definitely remember the frustration of waiting and finally getting a surgery date. I had my braces on for about a year and a half before surgery, though that varies dramatically with each case.

As for being scared, so many people are terrified before surgery, including myself, only to realize it really isn't that bad after it's over.

One of the latest examples is here:

Believe me, having braces on for a year is nothing, try having them on for 4 years.

JaimeT - I had my braces on for 34 months prior to Surgery, and it was really frusterating because my orthodontist and surgeon kept scheduling me for the surgery and then cancelling it the day prior because they wanted to move my teeth some more. I was actually in the hospital in the surgery prep room and my surgeon comes in and says..."After reviewing your records and molds, I think were going to have to push this operation a few months down the road"... Totall Mind Fu@#. Anyway, SO I had the surgery Aug 24, 2011 and couldnt be happier. Also, I went thru the same thing your going thru, I was TERRIFIED of going in for this surgery because I TOO wathced video's and pictures of other members and how swollen they were, I even watched a few video's of the surgery itself, which was also pretty intense.

Honestly, The best Advice I can give is just go with it... I Mean When your in the Pre-op room they're gonna give you drugs to take the edge off, and then before you know it your on your way to the surgery room, You'll be out in no time. When you come around, you will still be pretty out of it and not really know whats going on. You'll still be HEAVILY sedated so you'll probably be trying to talk a bunch of nonsense. As far as Pain goes, I wouldnt even worry about it. My entire face was numb (I couldnt feel anything) for like at least 2-3 months... there was some soreness just from the swelling, but on a scale of 1-10 I would say it was like a 3 or 4.... Surprisingly not bad for the type of surgery. BTW I had a Upper Jaw Advancement of like 4.5 mm

I honestly would not sweat it, it's really not that bad... The worst part for me was not being able to eat pizza :)
