My surgeon told me I needed surgery on my first consultation, he had a look at my bite, and then asked me a few questions about eating and stuff and from there he told me what had to be done. They might have to consider the x-rays but for me I didn't have x-rays until 2 weeks before surgery and he only used those to assess which jaws had to be done, and whether my chin had to be done.

I was told when I was 12 when I got my first set of braces put on. My surgeon also noticed when he took my wisdom teeth out when I was 16. He told me to come back when I was 18 so he could do upper jaw surgery. They can usually just tell by looking at the bite and size of the jaws and stuff. They know what they're looking for :)

My surgery decision was years in the making. I was told about 10 years ago that I may have needed it, ignored the advice, and sought professionals who told me that I really didn't need the surgery. Started having problems associated with my malocclusion a few years later. Moved to a new town, then my new dentist suggested I look into surgery and referred me to an orthodontist. My orthodontist originally wasn't sure that I needed it, then straightened my teeth and suggested I see a maxillofacial surgeon. Saw 3 of them and they all said I needed it. Got a 4th opinion just in case. Meanwhile, my dentist passed away. The new dentist said I should listen to the orthodontist and surgeons. It was unanimous.

I was told when I was 12 that I would need to have surgery to fix my underbite. When I went to see my orthodontist he took one look at me an started going through what the whole process involved and how long it would take. They never tell you have 'have' to have surgery as it's all down to you if you choose to have it or not as it's not a life threatening condition. However, because I'm in the UK they have to check about 20 times and go through all the possible ricks before they embark on any treatment. It's a long process and if you decide to drop out at any point that means them losing a lot of money. My ortho told me there are some people who have the orthodontics and then decide they're too scared to have the surgery. Other people have tried to remove the braces themselves!

They tried to fix my overjet with braces when I was younger, when that didn't work I was told surgeon was the of option. I was 14 & unsure about the surgery, but I had to put my name on a waiting list and was told it was best to do so.

It is a long process, but it's worth it. I'm 4 weeks post op and the difference in my chin is amazing!

I had my braces for 2 years before surgery and I will have them at least a year after.

I got told the surgery was up to me - they couldn't make me, but it would be beneficial. I'd thought about it a lot in the few years I'd had to decide.

If you're in England the biggest problems I had was getting ortho appots, they were often every 8 weeks so the process took awhile. Then your sirgery can get cancelled, but my care was great while I was in hospital :)
