    Hi

Just some during surgery questions, if anyone who is reading this know's ?
I dont see my surgeon for another 3 weeks... these are some of the questions i wanted to know.

1, What happens to all the blood and bone that comes away when they are cutting ?

2, Did you have catheter inserted for this surgery ? and if so does it go in and come out while you're asleep?

3, How long does this surgery usually go for on average ?

4, Also i have read you go to a high dependancy ward after, however my surgeon hasn't mentioned this yet ? If this is true. Why ?

    Thanks again...

I have 2 more weeks to go before my surgery starts provided that my blood test result are all ok. I had a nice chat with my surgeon and I got the whole list of information being gone through. So I'll try to explain it to you.

1, What happens to all the blood and bone that comes away when they are cutting ?

Well for my case I got to store in 1 unit of blood few days before my surgery cause it will be quite a big amount of blood lost during the surgery and after. For the sawed off bones maybe you can ask the surgeon if you can keep your sawed off bones as sounvenier? xD Usually people will dispose them off since they are sawed off. My 4 wisdom tooth looks gor enough to make me puke lets not think about bones.... -___-!!!

2, Did you have catheter inserted for this surgery ? and if so does it go in and come out while you're asleep?

Well some catheter will be inserted on your arm or hand for those pain killed to go in and those drips to prevent dehydration. I even had catheter on both of my hands for my wisdom tooth surgery. Feels weird as if I'm wolverine having those blades poping out of my hands xD

3, How long does this surgery usually go for on average ?

It takes roughly 4 to 6 hours for the surgery to be completed.

4, Also i have read you go to a high dependancy ward after, however my surgeon hasn't mentioned this yet ? If this is true. Why ?

Well you will have severe blood lost, severe swelling after the surgery. So it is a must for the nurses to have special care on the patient and not just take a look at the patient 3 to 4 times a day. Anything could happen so it is a need for the nurses to have special care on the patient for like 1 day.

Hi, just wanted to clear up the confusion about the catheter.

Yes, a catheter is inserted. Mine was taken out a few hours before I was discharged from the hospital. They will most likely only let you out once you are able to go to the washroom on your own, as well as drink something.

    Good luck

I hate it when the needle goes rubbing against the tissues near the bone of my hand real irritating eventough its just afew hours after my wisdom tooth surgery. Hope they won't insert the needle near the tissue of my bone after my orthogantic surgery I still have phobia of the catheter.

Pretty sure they just throw everything away....no reason to keep it.

2, Did you have catheter inserted for this surgery ? and if so does it go in and come out while you're asleep?

Yep...they inserted it while i was asleep, and it was removed the next day while i was awake. didn't hurt at all ever.

3, How long does this surgery usually go for on average ?

I had both upper and lower jaw surgery to correct my underbite, and the surgery was 6 1/2 hours + closing time which totals more l like 7 hours.

4, Also i have read you go to a high dependancy ward after, however my surgeon hasn't mentioned this yet ? If this is true. Why ?

I dont think i was in a "high dependancy ward" it was never mentioned to me... I stayed in the hospital for 3 nights, and the nurses came regular to change my ice packs and keep my pain killers and antibiotics up to speed...and my mother was also with me to attend to my comfort as well. The surgeon also came every morning and every evening to check on me....so i was definitely taken care of.

    Thanks for the replys.

Just to clarify things. With question 1 and question 2

Q1 What happens to all the blood and bone that comes away when they are cutting ?

I didn't mean i wanted to keep it, i dont really care what they do with it! haha :) I just want to know how do they prevent you from swallowing it... The thought of that is scary i mean if im swallowing it. How do i breathe? and not choke!

Q2 Did you have catheter inserted for this surgery ? and if so does it go in and come out while you're asleep?

A catheter is a plastic tube that is inserted through your vagina or penis into the bladder to help drain your bladder, during a long surgery. It's not a cannula, A cannula is the one inserted into the hand for fluid and medication! :)

Thanks if anyone could answer these 2.

Well if you can pee alright then they won't use a catheter. They said they would use one if I couldn't pee properly, so my bladder wouldn't burst. Hah...for me anyway. My surgery was less than 2 hours long though. So just make sure you concentrate hard after the surgery to pee by yourself! It's tough I tell you!

    1. They use a suction machine to suction it all away so that you don't swallow it. Once I was back to my room, they gave me the suction hose so I could do it on my own, to keep any of the blood from the stitches from being swallowed. I actually ended up renting one for a couple of weeks from a medical supply company when I got home so I could make sure I wasn't swallowing any blood (or at least as little as possible).

    2. I had a catheter inserted during my surgery. I believe because of the length of the surgery, they do this to most people. Mine was removed the following morning, once I was able to prove to them that I could stand up, and let me tell you, that was probably the most unpleasant part of the whole surgery for me (your mileage my very). They also made it very clear when they took it out that if I did not pee X amount in the next couple of hours, they were going to put it back in. You can bet your bottom dollar I peed twice as much to make sure it wasn't going back in.

    Hi Willow,

qn 1: they would perform suctioning, to suck out blood and fluids to prevent u fr swallowing them during surgery. however, some blood and fluids might still be ingested into ur stomach. for my case, a nasogastric tube was inserted thru the nose and into the stomach during the sugery. when i was out, my nasogastric tube was connected to a drainage bag to drain out any residual bloods and fluids ingested.

qn 2: the urinary catheter will be inserted into u after u r asleep during the surgery, so u do not feel anything at all. After the surgery, u will still be having the catheter and it shld be removed once u r more alert (perhaps the nx day) to be able to go to the toilet.

anyway im fr Singapore and i used to work as a registered nurse. i believe that every country surgeons practice slightly differently, but some things shld be more or less the same. i hope the abv info helps. =)
