hi all,
my boyfriend had surgery (le forte I osteotomy, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy + genioplasty) three days ago. He's been a champ and swelling seems to have subsided quite a bit, but now there's a lot of pain in his ear and what feels like muscle spasms in his jaw. I read online somewhere that Sudafed can help with this. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ice pack only? Warm compress? thanks in advance. I feel awful for him and don't know how to help...

It's normal for there to be some pain and discomfort at this stage, and the best thing to do is continue following the surgeon's guidelines, which for me was just to ice it several times a day.
He's already half way through the first week, and once that's over, it gets much easier.

I would say sudafed. If that doesn't work, try the pain med prescribed & ask your surgeon. Seems like everyone's surgeon allows different medicines. I had the same things done as your boyfriend (minus the genioplasty) and my surgeon didn't allow ice packs for swelling. He says that interferes with bone healing and bone grafts. He also doesn't allow advil or other antiinflammatories--just tylenol and the prescribed Tramadol because that interferes with bone healing too. I would not do heat as your face is so sensitive and numb. I was allowed sudafed and afrin, so I would try those.
Hope it helps!Posted 1 year ago #
