I was just wondering what everyone was able to eat when they were 3 weeks post-op. I was wired shut for the first week and now I'm told I can eat soft foods but I'm not sure how soft I should stay. I still have a splint and bands but I can take them off when I eat.

It's best to start out slowly with really soft foods, then slowly work your way up over the next week or so as you feel stronger and more comfortable moving your jaw again.
I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

at about 3 weeks, i think i was doing mostly mashed potatoes, pastas and other things that i could easily break down in my mouth. even though my doctor told me i could start chewing things, i still felt a little uncomfortable biting into anything. it's all a matter of what feels comfortable to you. it's good to start building your jaw muscles back up, but don't push yourself too hard. your body will tell you if you're doing too much. if you start to get pain in your jaw, take it down a notch. at about 6 weeks, i felt much more comfortable about chewing. it also depends on the numbness you might have... my teeth and gum numbness had a lot to do with why using my teeth felt so strange at first. good luck - it's all downhill from here! :)
I had orthognathic surgery on my upper and lower jaws to correct a cross-bite and underbite on June 7th, 2010. It's been a long journey, but I would do it all over again. The results have been life-changing, and if sharing my experience helps others, it makes it all the more worthwhile. :)Posted 1 year ago # -
Are you on your second week? That's where i'm at. I'm sticking to just mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, lots of soups. Anything that doesn't require chewing. If you're boiling noodles just break up the dry noodles before hand so u can just swallow them easily, might get kinda hard if they're really long. If you get creative there are a lot of things you can eat, you may just have to blend it before or break it up before it goes into your mouth. Do the work the teeth do outside of your mouth, that said, i probably wouldn't be blending up a steak or a burger or anything lol.

I ate tons and tons of pasta, because it tasted great and had some texture. Tender chicken is good too, as long as it's in small pieces and easy to chew.

I was eating mashed potatoes, yams, squash, apple sauce (my favorite), spaghettio's, and lots of ensure (drink). At first, in week 3, pasta was too much, but now in week 4 I can handle it. I have found lasagna, cut up in small pieces, to be heaven at the moment! Finally feels like I am getting substance in me. I am still under doctor's orders to not chew. So I put small pieces in, and smash it against the roof of my mouth with my tongue. Good luck, Christina :)

I miss my Asian food, so after 2 1/2 weeks, I buy porridge and steam fish from Chinese restaurant every day. They are easy to swallow without chewing and very tasty to my preference. I also have chopped steam soy sauce chicken with my porridge in addition to fish. My breakfast is over easy egg, put a bit of pepper & maggie sauce and oatmeal with condensed milk. Ice Cream is also good for dessert. I also love smoothies from Jamba Juice for drink. Tonight, I just tried cheese cake...yum!

Im on week 3, still cant chew, only mash it up on the roof of my mouth with my tounge and swallow it.
The below is my diet so far;
Soggy hot chips (they have to be thin ones though), with salt as its good for wounds too.
Chicken aslong as its in little bits
Noodles aslong as its mushed
Macaroni and Cheese aslong as its sloppy
Youghart
Sloppy Icecream
Raveoli (cut it up in lil pieces)
Soft grilled fish (no bones)
2 x Boiled eggs, mash them up, add 3 tablespoons of Mayonaise, add curry powder = awesome
Scrambled eggs (above option is easier to eat)
Mash Potato with cheese
Puree fruit
Mashed Banannas
soupuse teaspoons to eat as its so much easier than forks/tablespoons.
dont forget to use mouthwash after every meal.
Colgate Wisps are awesome to brush your teeth whilst you have swollen mouth as they are so tiny.
