    Hi

Tomorrow I'm getting my braces: it suddenly seems very real. I thought I'd better upload some 'before' photos as the next time my teeth will be naked I'll have a new look. I'm under know illusion that I'll suddenly have super-model looks post surgery, I just would like to look vaguely average.

As you can see I have a very gummy smile, incompetent lips, an overbite and big teeth.

    This is my 'smile'.

Good luck getting your braces fitted. They can get sore at times but wax works wonders and just keep telling yourself it's soooo worth it :-)

Braces on now. They've been rubbing my mouth so very grateful for the wax the ortho gave me. Had an interesting day at work today; 30 little sets of eyes looking at my mouth and asking lots of questions. They noticed I couldn't pronounce 's' very well. Explained situation to other staff and they seemed interested and wanted to share their stories of braces.

Hi all. Not sure where my photo has gone?!

Getting on better with braces now. First 2 weeks were hell; wire constantly digging into cheeks.

I guess things are moving as I can now no longer bite on my back teeth. My teeth now rest on my pre molars, although I keep thinking one is getting loose. When I touch it with my finger it seems fine, but every now and then, when I'm talking, it feels loose.
    Is this normal?

Hi Faceache! I had the same experience the first few weeks with braces, everyone said I would get used to them "in a few days," it definitely takes a few weeks. Now over 9 months in I barely notice them, which I could never have imagined before! The biggest annoyance is still all the food that gets caught in them, though that too gets better with practice.

Do you know what you're having done surgically? I imagine definitely maxillary impaction, maybe something with your lower jaw as well? And may I ask how old you are?

Hi Olive. I'm 28 (think I was 26 in the photo though)

I am definitely having upper jaw impacted, but the surgeon isn't sure about the bottom jaw. He said he'd like me to sign consent for for both jaws, but only do bottom if if needs it.

So you are nearly ready for surgery after only 9 months of braces? Lucky you! Are you from the UK?

    No, I'm Canadian.

My surgery will actually be on the 10 month anniversary of when I got my braces on. They had quoted me a year of braces before surgery, but I was ready a little early. I'm supposed to have them for a year after surgery too so this might even shorten my total braces time if I'm lucky. The first time I met with the surgeon he asked when a good time for surgery would be for me (i.e. if I were still in school, I'd have to wait until summer, which is the busiest time for him). I told him anytime between January and March, because I knew I wanted to be recovering in the winter, when everyone else is hibernating, too!
