I'm 24 and have a serious underbite :-(
It's bothered me ever since I was around 11 years old but Ive never had the convidence to talk about it to anyone. A few months ago I had the courage to mention it to my dentist who refered me to an orthodontist.
I went to see the orthodontist this week and sat talking to her for a while and the tears came flowing.. I realised how unhappy I had been with my apearrance for all these years and how much I had kept it all bottled up. I have never discussed it with my Mother or BF.
Anyway, the ortho has now refered me to the hospital orthodontist and she told me that I should take a list of questions with me to my initial appointment. Any ideas what I should ask..?
Ive thought about surgery for a long time. I thought it would be an option because Im over 18 and you can only have ortho surgery on the NHS in the uk if your under 18 but it appears that I maybe able to. Anyone else had this done in the UK over 18...? How long was the waiting list..?
I thought it was just the cosmetic side of things but after reading loads of forums I now know the reasons for some other things I have like a really clicky jaw, occassional slurred speach and trouble chewing.
I hate having my photo taken and looking at photos of me. Even on my wedding day I instructed the photographer not to take any photos of me from the side :-(
I really hope they offer me the surgery! I know its gonna be a long process with the braces and really painful surgery but I really really want the issue to be corrected....
Ps. Love this forum! Its helped so much already!!

Some of the questions that I would ask are:
Will I need upper and lower jaw surgery, or just one?
Will I need other adjustments, such as a chin expansion or widening of my palate, etc.?
Will my case likely be deemed medically necessary for coverage purposes?I'm sure you'll think of others, and hopefully others on here will add to the list, but just make sure to write them down, because the more questions you ask, the better.
I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!
