Totally true Brandon, I love the details Lucrezia- that's where all the important facts lie that people forget to tell you about!
Well it looks like you and I have a lot in common, but in a mirror image- all the numb spots on the right side of your face are the same as the left part of mine!
I didn't hear about puckering, but that's a good idea- I'll start incorporating that into my daily routine!
So do you feel like trickles of water, or like the tip of a feather being run down/along the cheek/eye area that are numb? I know that's the nerves trying to reconnect, so it's good to feel it...
I can feel part of my palate, but for the most part nothing, and definitely nothing along the top teeth or gums- that makes it interesting for brushing!
I have a feeling when I get the wires out Monday my Dr. will recommend Ibuprofen as well, and I would be happy to take that especially if it helps with swelling...anything that gets my face back to normal faster is quite welcome!

So nice to be able to come here and tell my fun tale! Thanks for "listening!"
Sometimes I feel like my cheek is itching, almost like it's underneath the skin, but when I try to scratch it or rub it, it doesn't help! It's incredibly annoying!
The brushing is definitly weird! The first week, I was so scared that I'd hit the stitches, I kept the brush angled down, pressing on my braces. Now that I know the stitches are gone and the wound itself is closed, it's much less scary to brush. Do you use a waterpik? I was told not to use it the first 2 weeks cause the pressure could tear open the stitches, but I have a waterpik that you can adjust the flow, and when it's turned all the way down, it's like dribbling water. That has really helped me keep my mouth cleaner, especially since I can't floss yet (cause of this stupid splint thing!) I got the idea from my dental hygenist about a year ago to use a mixture of water and mouthwash instead of just water in it...that feels soooo nice! I can floss my bottom front teeth, but because of the swelling in my cheeks still, it's too hard to get to the molars with the floss-threaders.
I'm so anxious and excited to have this splint removed, which won't be for another 4-5 weeks, so I can finally feel my new bite! I can see it...in fact, sometimes I just stare at it in the mirror! I just want to be able to bite down and feel how it feels!I had upper jaw surgery 2/3/10...well on my way to recovery, a great smile and finally being able to chew normally!Posted 2 years ago # -
Of course, I love hearing it! And I totally know what you mean about scratching that itch and it not doing any good, that is very annoying!
I have heard from multiple people about the water pik now, so I guess I will go out and get myself one this weekend...everyone swears by it.
So I don't get how the splint stays in when you take your rubber bands off to eat...how does that work?
I can see the new bite too and love it already, of course once the wires are off I'll have an even better idea of how it looks and feels!Posted 2 years ago # -
P.S. Has anyone had the sneezing/coughing experience while wired shut?! It's weird...I just started sneezing like crazy today, although the coughing has been sporadic since the day I came home- very unsettling at first...and no I'm not sick and don't have allergies...I wonder if it's part of the healing process?! I can only hope...

Hi. I have really enjoyed your "tales". You mentioned that you have a splint. Well, so do I and I am almost 4 weeks post-op. My question to you si can you see how they "secure" the splint in. Mine is through my gums and it looks so painful to get taken out..BUT the doctors said no one complains. I guess at that point you just want that darn thing out! Also, i dont have bands, they said i didnt need them cause my bit is right on! I am supposed to be on a liquid diet, but I eat anything and everything that i can chop up really small. I make sur i dont chew but i manage to eat most things. My face is also numb and tingly at times..so that is annoying. But i find when my muscles freak out in hurt. Does yours do that?

Hey there again :)
My splint has wires that go through it and then up and around several of my brackets, so it's wired to the braces. I imagine that different dr's do it differently though Crystal. My upper gums and palate are still completely dead numb, so even if they had to remove it from them, I don't think I'd even be able to feel it! It seems like they wouldn't put it through the gums though, because wounds in the mouth are at really high risk for infection.
Alyx, I've had the sneezies since about 5 days out...what the heck is that about?! Maybe just the sinuses trying to clear themselves out? Funny, that was one of my fears prior to the surgery...what do I do if I have to sneeze, cough or throw up?! My dr told me, don't worry about, don't hold it back because that'll just hurt more, so just let it go!Posted 2 years ago # -
Lucrezia,
I don't know what that's about, but now that I'm unwired it's no biggie- it was just really weird there for a while!
So I've noticed something new this week, I have this "mustache" of little red bumps across my upper lip where I'm guessing they had the oxygen tube taped to my face- guess I had a reaction to it...funny that it appeared nearly 2 weeks later...
I never did get any bruising on my face, did you?
How's your swelling and numbness coming along? I hope you see progress each day like I do- although I'm still frustrated that it's taking so long (it's been 2.5 weeks- as you can tell I have NO patience for this whole healing thing!!)! My ortho says I'm about 50% of the way there...I just can't wait to get all the metal out of my mouth and go back to regular little rubber bands instead of all the wires and hooks!Posted 2 years ago # -
