    Hi guys and gals..

I have finally booked my surgery. I am 3 and a bit weeks away from having my operation to move both jaws forward..Not that im counting hehe. My question to whoever would like to share is! How did you prepare yourself mentally? I know it may be normal to be nervous. But im terified mostly of permanent numbness!!!! I also have concerns about the pain/discomfort, swelling and of course going under the knife. Is it that bad really? LOL :) Am i overreacting!! How did you prepare yourself and overcome your fears ? any tips ?

    Most appreciated

FIrst off, it's really not that bad, not nearly as bad as we all, including myself, build it up to be beforehand.

It's still completely normal to be scared and nervous, and I was terrified the morning of the surgery with my heart rate through the roof when they tested it, haha, but try and take comfort in the fact that all these success stories on the forum could soon be you too!

I was super terrified about my jaw surgery and I got absolutely no idea how was the process for the past 6 years and I am being brainwashed annually about the surgery which totally freaks me out like a ever lasting nightmare. Then I went searching on youtube but those videos are just not enough. Then I happen to find brandons video and his link, and I manage to see those blogs of other patients. xD Thanks brandon for sharing your experiences =) really get me mentally prepared for my coming surgery xD

I was the exact opposite of you before surgery. I was totally relaxed and cool with everything, no fears at all. I figured it couldn't possibly be that bad and I could get through anything. I guess that was a good way to be since it saved me a lot of pre-surgery grief... but at the same time, after surgery i kind of had a wake up call and reality hit. In all honesty, it was not a fun experience at all the first week. There's not a lot of pain, but it is pretty uncomfortable until you get the swelling under control - i recommend ice packs 24/7 the first week. just stay on top of your pain meds (they'll help with the swelling), rinse with salt water to avoid infection and you'll be fine. Permanent numbness is pretty rare i think...but it is a little frustrating waiting for it to come back. Right now i'm 5 weeks out of surgery....and looking back at everything, i have no problems saying it was a sucky experience but i wouldn't change a thing. I was right with my pre-surgery thoughts....its not THAT bad and you can get through anything. Just try to stay positive...its mostly a mind game!

That is very true. It's a mind game more than anything. I'm on day 7, and all the worst is behind me. Just use lots of ice, drink lots of fluids, and it should go fine. This is a wonderful web site, and I'm so glad to have found it. All your questions are answered within the day you asked it. All you really should do while recovering is stay in bed, apply lots of ice on face for swelling, drink lots of high calorie drinks, keep mouth clean with salt water, and get good rest. Try not to do a lot.

I was also very calm before the surgery. Maybe I didn't think about it a lot. I even held my hand out from time to time, right before the surgery, to check if I was shaking hahaha, and I wasn't. Kept totally cool. But that's probably because I'm good at distracting myself, and wandering off.
Just remember it could be a lot worse. You're actually very lucky to be able to get this surgery; just think of the future ahead of you and great it will be with this problem out of the way. Some people are stuck with this problem with no way of paying for it.
They're working on your jaw, not your brain or your spine. This is very safe. You will be fine!
    hah did that help?
