I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed under general anesthesia at the hospital and even though it was quite painful afterward, it really wasn't as bad as I expected. Now I'm gonna get jaw surgery next year and was wondering how it compares. I will probably get bi-jaw surgery with a genioplasty to correct my gummy smile, inexistant chin and to help me close my mouth properly. Thanks!

I had my wisdom teeth out the same way as you (all 4 and general) I can safely say that having my wisdom teeth out was much more painful than double jaw surgery. Seriously!! You won't be able to feel anything after jaw surgery hence no pain. Recovery from jaw surgery takes longer but you'll have a numb face so won't feel anything.
You'll dribble much more and have more swelling but it's all worth it. All the best with your surgery. I've got no regrets at all!

Really? Wow you have no idea how relieved this makes me. I wonder if it's the case for everyone tho.

Most people are surprised by how little jaw surgery hurts. The most uncomfortable thing is the swelling, not your jaw. You won't be able to feel your face for about six weeks and by that point there won't be any pain.

every case is different but it does seem that most people have them removed. I had mine taken out 16 years before my surgery so can't tell you if they would have taken them out in order to do the surgery!

i should really have asked my ortho on the last few visits, i've noticed he's not bothered to put the metal bands around them so they're not braced.

I had all four wisdom teeth removed, and had no pain, no discomfort and no swelling. It was, if anything, quite relaxing, as I got to spend a few days watching movies. Jaw surgery for me was a completely different story, considerable pain, very difficult, a lot of breathing problems, and a very slow recovery. However, I seem to be the exception!

Jaw surgery had 0 pain for me lol. It makes sense when you think about it, bones don't really have nerves but ripping teeth out can leave behind a few pangs. ^_^

My lower left wisdom tooth was removed about 6 months ago. The was painful but bearable. I had my lower right wisdom tooth removed 7 days back. While doing the procedure he broke my jaw! Had a lower jaw surgery yesterday. It was not at all painful, I was in general anesthesia though!

    Conclusion:
Pain while removing wisdom tooth = 8/10
Pain while jaw surgery = 4/10
