mkbannon36- I am 10 weeks after surgery, I have a fat face now and my lips are not as shaped as they once were. How are you doing now that it is 12 weeks after your surgery. Has the swelling subsided or reduced at all? Let us know, man. Thanks.

Hi - I'm now 17 weeks and 2 days post op from upper, lower and genio. I'm still struggling with the swelling, especially on the left side. The changes have been extremely slow. I still don't have a lot of feeling in my upper teeth or gums or on the lower left side. I can now feel my teeth on the lower right side. It's still really tight feeling in my lower cheeks. It's taking some time to get used to my new face - it looks very different to me. Others have said I look much better, but I still notice the swelling. Seems it's going to take a lot of time to get back to normal.

Hi mkbannon36, I had upper jaw surgery on 9/30/11 and I'm still puffy at the same areas that you have described. The left and right side of the area next to my nose (Maxillary Sinus) including my nose are still swollen as they were 3 days after surgery and they feel hard, similar to a mosquito bite. I was worried and my Dr. said I will need more time to allow the swelling to go down since it's only been 24 days. I'm glad to have found this forum and know that it's not unusual and I'm not the only one experiencing these symtoms.

10 weeks post op on Thursday... Swelling is still present..but only noticeable to me. It seems like when I eat some days...or just use my mouth more than usual the swelling seems to peak the next day. Upper cheeks are puffy to me..top lip is a little out there and my nose is finally going down.

I had upper jaw surgery in March of 2009 then had pic done for a dance recital at the end of May - I still notice the swelling then. I think it took a good 6 months before the residual swelling went away. You will see most of the swelling to be gone in the 2-3 week time period but still have some left. The thing to remember is that your face is going to look much worse to you because you know every nook and cranny of your face, most people won't notice the residual swelling as much as you will. They will be focused on the new face you have and how much better your smile is! And remember to smile and show off the hard work you have been through!

Hi,
I'm on 31st day of post broken jaw surgery. I still have quite a bit of swelling left. The surgeon said it will take 2 months before the face looks symmetric again. I do not have any feeling in right chin, lower right lip and right gum.

Hi mkbannon36, how has your swelling changed since your last post? I'm at the 4 month mark and am in a similar situation. My face still feels tight and I'm pretty sure I still have some swelling. However, I'm not sure how much of what I see is swelling vs. the final result.
My nose is definitely a little wider and uneven now, especially when I smile. I mostly dislike the result, especially my smile which looks unnatural and caricatured. I really hoped one of the benefits of jaw surgery would be an improved smile, but so far have been shocked to find that my smile looks even worse. People's body language seems to be more negative now when I smile vs. before the surgery. It's upsetting and I often regret having the operation.

Hey - totally new to this whole thing. I actually had surgery 18 days ago, and most of the "Holy crap you look like you got into a fight with a semi and lost" swelling is gone. However, I have this continually puffy face. It is mostly in my cheeks and my jaw line itself. I had my upper jaw moved forward, and did not have my lower jaw done, but they did do a genioplasty to slide my chin forward 5mm because my profile was so bad.
Does anyone know of any foods or any way to get this chipmunk look to go away? I know I am food remedies or found anything that helps (or hurts) the swelling? I am a teacher, and starting back at work tomorrow... so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the early phases of healing.

Hi Ipticket2 Im just 8 days into recovery. I saw my surgeon he said the more you move your jaw the more the swelling will go down? I think he has lost the plot though he also made me cry by asking me why I cant open my mouth fully and I felt so stupid because I dont know why I just cant! Its impossible! i cant even get my tongue to move from the bottom of my mouth! I am currently living on ready brek and ice cream totally fed up and lloking for people further along than me to tell me it gets better!
