If i get this surgery done it would be for cosmetic purposes only seeing as I don't have any issues with eating etc. and it surely will improve my self esteem since I have little of it.
I've had braces before and my teeth were tremendously horrendous! I couldn't even keep my mouth close and to this day its still difficult sometimes. But my teeth are straight and I have somewhat of a proper bite. But I have an issue with my jaw and how I look from my profile view plus I have lip incompetence.
I'm from Canada so how much would it cost me??

It varies wildly from place to place, surgeon to surgeon, and insurance company to company, but my personal cost breakdown is here:

I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

I've heard a wide range from 2,000 US dollars to 3,000 US dollars. In the end; he's right. It all depends on insurance, where, and who your going to. Maybe talking to a surgeon for a consult, then talk to your insurance for rough estimate of what you will be actually paying. Best of luck, wish you the best! :)

    Hey!
I am JoAnna-20 yrs. old, and I have a Class 3 under-bite.I'm having maxillofacial jaw surgery(the top and bottom jaw surgery-but I'll have my chin adjusted as well)and got my braces 5/21/10.
My surgery date is Valentine's Day 2012. Super excited =D

It sounds like you might be doing this surgery without insurance, but Canada has free health care so not sure what this will mean to you.

My surgery cost my insurance company 36K, and I paid $150

    :)

Alright after reading Brandons breakdown on what his surgery cost I guess I forgot a few things.

Braces for one year before surgery and about one year after surgery = $5-6K out of pocket

Multiple appt with surgeon and doctor visits = $200

    Jaw surgery = $150

I also took off of work for one month, but luckily it was all paid, I saved up vacation time and also FMLA covered part of that as well.

Yea, different insurances, different countries, AND different doctors?

There's really no straight answer across the board. Research is your best option...
Talk to all of them to find out what would be your range, and if you absolutely have to pay then figure out a payment plan if needed. Luckily for me; i'm covered still through my mom till I am 21. So that's my deadline! lol

Hope all this helps a bit :)

It looks like my surgery cost a lot more than most. I had a bilater sagital split osteomy (to correct underbite) on Dec 1, 2009. I have insurance that I consider to be pretty good. I Paid for braces out of pocket, $5500, than each time I went to the surgeon it cost 50 dollars, I had to pay a deductible to the hospital of $1,000 prior to the surgery, and other than that I didnt have to pay anything else up front. The insurance paid about 45 thousand to the hospital and 25 thousand to the surgeon. I am still paying the surgeon off for 2000 that the insurance didnt cover and I owe the hospital about $2500. All in all i think it cost me about 12/13 grand out of pocket. but I was worth it and i Wouldnt go back in time and un-do it.
    Hope this helps!

I live in South Africa and had to sit with my calculator to figure out how much you guys' surgery cost in comparison to mine. My surgery is scheduled for this year Dec. My total cost on braces were R35000 for ceramic braces - the see through ones, (which comes to about $4900) my medical aid (I assume thats what you mean when you say insurance) is covering one third of this amount. Meaning - I pay roughly R23000 and the Medical aid pays R12000. My surgery quote is R20000 ($2800)This brings my grand total to a whopping R63 000 ($8820) Medical Aid - $2940. Own cost - $5880
These quotes are from the top orthodontist and maxillo surgeon in Africa who both charge 300% of the proposed rate.(Hence the Medical aid only covers a third) Heavy days :-/ Saying that it looks like you guys in the States should invest in an African Safari for jaw surgery. Its cheaper here :) Oh and if youre hesitating about the quality of work, Ill be posting my journey soon :)

Awesome, thanks for the breakdown Chris, and yes, that does seem a bit cheaper on average compared to here.

Can't wait to follow your journey, and good luck!

I got my surgery done for free.. I live in a area where a lot of people are not financially fortunate. I got my surgery done in USC/LAC hospital In Los Angeles, Ca. After everything was done I rested for about a week then I went to the lower floor and applied for a plan called orsa. Since I am a student and don't make much money I qualified immediately and now I don't have to pay nothing :). I consider myself very lucky to have found out about this. Anybody who lives in the Los angeles area I suggest going to this hospital.
