Hi, firstly i just wanted to say how brave you are! Such an ordeal to go through, you look so fantastic! I live in the UK and am going to see a specialist here in 2 weeks to discuss jaw surgery. I have an overbite, and have always been bullied because of it. I'm thinking very seriously about having surgery as i think it will improve my confidence greatly. I just wanted to ask you that throughout the video clips you dont really mention being in that much pain? I just wanted someone to give me a brutally honest answer about the pain. I'm so concerned about complications such as will it affect my speech and stuff like that? I'd be really grateful if you could fill me in on little details that you may have missed on your clips.
    Thanks!

Thanks Natalie! Yes, I was lucky enough to not have any pain throughout the entire process. There was definitely pressure and discomfort, but never any actual pain for me. I know some people have more pain than others, but I've come across others that didn't have any pain either, so you may be one of the lucky ones too!

In some cases it may affect a patient's speech, but even then, it's almost always an improvement, such as eliminating a lisp.

Make sure you have as many questions as prepared as possible to take into your meeting, and they'll be glad to answer every one of them to help put your mind at ease.

And of course I'll be here in the meantime to help in any way I can, so keep me updated!

I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

first off, pain is all a matter of opinion. i for one have NO pain tolerance. i can feel anything and everything. for about 3 days after surgery i was at about 8/10 on the pain level. when i wouldnt take my pain killers since they tasted gross, it would get to like 11/10. it was pretty brutal. but then that was only like 3 days. by day 4, the pain didnt just lighten up a little but totally disappear! so weird. and also some people dont feel anything. sometimes when the nerve gets cut it also cuts the pain out too. in my case it didnt, but for you it might. just take your pain killers and it kills the pain to about a 4/10 most the time. which for 3 days compared to the rest of your life is nothing.
my speech was effected only because i had the metal expander in. it gave me a nasty lisp, but if youre not having an expansion surgery, you wont have that! my speech is now alot more clear. so the only speech differences are improvings.

ill be honest for me the pain was lik seriously a 14 out of 10 the first week and then it got better but i will say i had my wisdom teeth taken out and the docs say that that was mainly the cause of my pain more so than the jaw surgery

Yeah, I would agree with chmpduke, the wisdom teeth removal I had a few weeks before surgery was more painful than the actual surgery, but even that wasn't quite as bad for me.

I'd say the wisdom teeth were about a 5 out of 10 and the jaw surgery was a 1 or 2.

The pain for me also was ok. Because i was numb i could not feel any pain, but as Brandon said, its more discomfort! I had wisdom teeth taken out whilst they did the opperation so that was not painfull either because of the numbness.
I did get a pain in one part of my lip witch was weird. When i had to take my medicine through a seringe in would set off the pain and it would shoot through to my teeth. Even the nurses and surgeon did'nt understand. But at least its ok now!
But all very much worth it!!
