    Hello,

I'm trying to go through the process of my surgery, if it will happen.

I have to put in an appeal to my insurance company, Blue shield of CA. I know that this may happen a lot. It's still a shock. Does anyone have any experience in this?

I have a retrognathic mandible a jaw deformaty, which means my jaws grew down ward. I only found this out last month. I first went to my regular dr. with belching problems, swallowing air when I sleep or eat. She gave me pills that did not help. I then went to a gastroenterologist. Where I had an endoscopy, nothing wrong. He suggested that I see an ENT that I may be swallowing air when I sleep because of my recessed jaw. I then saw the ENT. He sent me for a sleep study and told me to chew more slowly. I had the sleep study which showed I have sleep apnea, not a sever case. The ENT (ear nose throat) sent me to an orthognathic surgeon. He said the CPAP would be for life, breathing with a mask on my head at night with oxygen. So I went to the Orthognathic surgeon and he told me what I had. I then had an xray which showed that my air ways are really small which is why I have the problem with sleep apnea. ( I could go to sleep right now, ha ha) Anyway I've gotten the braces and I'm waiting to see if I can get the surgery. I hope so. I really don't want to sleep with a bloody mask on my face.

Brandon, I really enjoy your blog. Thank you so much, especially the introductory email. Hope all of this isn't too much at once. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Aisling,

Yeah, having to appeal is pretty common from what I've heard, as my surgeon was almost prepared to do it before the initial decision, but they approved mine immediately.

I think it's more of a formality than anything, especially for someone like you who has been to so many doctors and can really back up your case, so I hope your appeal goes well.

Getting your surgeon and/or any of the above-mentioned doctors to include a note or anything describing your symptoms would help a lot I'm sure.

Let us know how it goes, and best of luck with it!
