Hi, I'm now 6 weeks post op lower jaw surgery and my jaw clicks whenever I open my mouth. it's not exactly painful, but I'm starting to worry that I might have developed TMJ. If I keep opening and closing my mouth continuously the clicking sound goes away, but when I have my mouth closed for a bit then open it again, I hear the clicking sound again. When I told my surgeon he told me not to worry about it, but the more I research it the more I become concerned. Have any of you experienced this and did it go away as your jaw healed more?

I don't think clicking alone is TMJ. I had TMJ before the surgery. I had really bad clicking. To open my mouth properly I had to click my jaw in to place on the left side and my jaw would randomly kinda lock up and I would only be able to open my mouth about two finger widths wide. It would stay locked for any amount of time. Sometimes a few minutes, other times a full day.

I'm 26 weeks post-op on Monday, and I get some clicking in both sides of my jaw. It comes and goes. It's nowhere near on the same level of clicking as I had before though.

Exactly same issue! I'm 8 weeks post op, and last few weeks I've notice my left side keeps making a clicking/grating noise and sounds like something is moving. It hurts a little bit and is definitely still swollen more on that side. My next appointment is in 11 days :/

Dont worry. I was clicking too (when i opened my mouth, when I yawned, when I chew food). I told my surgeon and he said its because we have to stretch our jaws. So He showed me some exercises (1. get a warm tower and massage the joints 2. OPen your mouth as wide as you can (dont open til it hurts)and keep openning it for at least 2 min. 3. slightly open your jaw and push it towards the left for 1 min than the right for another minute (I was 5 months post op so not sure if you should do this one)). He told me to do this as many times I can during the day (I did it 3x when I showered. After 2 weeks i can hear the clicking becoming quieter and than after 1 month it was completely gone. My doc told me the clicking is normal so dont worry just do those exercise or the ones your doctor tells you to do

Thanks guys! This definitely put some ease in my mind.
Thecw- After chewing and talking more, my jaw has stopped clicking. It still pops sometimes when I open my mouth, but hopefully this too will go away as I function my jaw more.
