Hi there! I just wanted to know whether the maxillofacial surgeon creates a 3d image of your face to give you an idea of how your jaws/overall face will look after surgery. I'm getting my surgery on the nhs so was wondering whether any of you already have had a 3d image made of you?

I don't think they do on the NHS but it all depends where you are in the UK. A friend of mine having surgery in Scotland had a cone beam (3d scan) done done but I never did. They won't do any graphics etc to show you what you might look like unless you pay to have it done privately

I had my surgery in UK and I never had a 3D image either.

I had an estimated image of what I would look like after surgery made by my surgeon. They used a programme called Dolphin, and it was just a photo of my profile, not a 3D image or any fancy graphics. I'm paying for my op privately though, and I had to ask quite a few times for the image.

I am having my surgery privately but my surgeon does both private and NHS & he does NOT offer the 3d scan. I think it is because you do necessarily come out looking like the 3d picture as they are not 100% & you may become fixated on that look and be disappointed with the result?

Not sure but I really wanted one but coul not get one.

Over bite: palate expander, braces & bi-surgery with genioplasty Jan 2012!

May I ask what the benefits of having the surgery privately in the UK is please?

Can you recommend a surgeon in London?

Being a private patient means (in my case anyway) that you can have appointments out of hours, no waiting, my orthodontist is currently on maternity leave but she comes in to see her private patients so I'm not missing out, I got a choice of which hospital I wanted my surgery at, I have white ceramic brackets on my top teeth so you can't see them (had to ask for these though). And I think I get a private room at hospital.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, lol.
I can't recommend a London surgeon as I'm having my surgery in Oxfordshire.

I've had private health care in the past and can honestly say I felt like I was a private patient when I had my surgery, even though I had my treatment on the NHS.
Benefits of private? Your own room at hospital, choice of ceramic brackets for your othodontics, appointements when you want them and no waiting.
I had to wait 18 months for my treamtment to start with the NHS but once the treatment was had started, it was just the same treatment as if I'd had it privately apart from you get nicer carpets and nicer food in private hospitals...which didn't matter because I couldn't eat anything anyway!

Yeah the menu you can't eat ha ha!! I had my palate broken last Nov and I got given a menu to choose my breakfast, lunch & dinner. I had no idea whatto choose as knew I could not eat much. In the end went for cottage pie which my mum ate!! The person who brought my food was sympathetic and switched my boring yogurt for ice cream :)

Benefits of going private as above really - private room, telly once in hospital, appointments when I choose rather than when given (great for my work!!), ceramic clear top brackets. But braces cost a fortune - but for me and my work life it was worth it in the end. Surgery is covered by private insurance.

Before mine they just did a line on my XRay to show me, however that was when they were going to move both jaws but they only moved the bottom in the end and I didn't get an estimate of what I was to look like. My surgery was only really for bite reasons (underbite and cross bite) and although my profile bothered me it wasn't in any of my reasons for getting surgery so maybe they just thought I wasn't bothered by seeing it.
