Oakwood, just wondering how you are doing? Has your swelling gotten better and do you still compare this to your original surgery? I really do not like the idea of having the screws left in my jaw so I would like to have them taken out in the future if this is possible. Thanks so much for any further information,
    Hunter

I'd love an update as well, Oakwood, as I'm still very interested in this procedure.

I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I haven't been on the forum recently. As time has gone by (now 5 weeks postop), it has gotten much better. The swelling went way down after a steroid pack. The numbness is mostly gone from my face except for the upper lip and corner of the nose, which were always the most numb areas. I still have tingling in the upper lip, which is a good sign that hopefully the feeling will come back completely. The incision inside my mouth is still "tight" and restricting my lip movement a little bit, worse when I drink cold drinks. The bone is still not completely healed because I can feel sensitivity when I press on my cheekbone.

Overall, yes it is very much like the original surgery. One good difference is the decreased amount of nasal swelling. My nasal passages swelled shut after the first surgery. I just had minor nasal stuffiness with the plate removal. Also I had much more bruising on my face with the removal than the original surgery. I had a large bruise on the lower portion of my face by the corner of my mouth. It took a couple weeks for that to go away. I looked like someone had hit me in the jaw. This might have been because the surgeon had trouble removing one of the screws. I guess it was stuck in the bone.

If this keeps me from getting further sinus infections, then great. It will be worth the suffering then. If not, then I'm sorry I did it.

    Hi
I had the screws removed post op 1 year after surgery because they had started to emerge and got infected, the procedure was fine and with very little discomfort. I then had the plates removed in prep for more surgery and Orthodontics, this was a little painful, but NOTHING like the surgery, just like an impacted wisdom tooth extraction.

    Hi all
I had a little trouble breathing through my nose before the opperation. But after the opperation, i seem to be able to breathe better. I breathe through my nose alot more now, before i always breathed through my mouth. I am 7 months post opp and hope my plates and screws will not become infected. How would that happen?
Sartre, 1 Year after your opp they got infected? How did you notice something was not right? I would have hoped everything would be ok by then. I am worried now incase things can still go wrong!

    Hi Bexx
Unfortunately, I had the screws break through my skin and come through lower rear jaw line. It was not very nice, but the hospital booked me in the next day for procedure to remove the screws and it was all done and finished - to be honest less metal to go off through the air port scanning!! This was totally rare and I have never heard it happening before - so don't worry!! The plates were removed for remedial surgery which again is very rare, but sadly I was one of the unlucky ones who has had a rather traumatic time with it all. Thank God though I have found an amazing surgeon who has put my jaw in the correct place and already nearly 3 weeks post op I can see such a wonderful difference!!

When you had the screws removed did you have to go through the horrible liquid diet like after jaw surgery? If so for how long? I'm just wondering in case I ever get mine removed.

No, it was a simple procedure with relatively little discomfort and NOTHING like the jaw surgery!!

I had gotten a plate in my lower left side of my jaw 14 years ago about 1 year ago a screw came out the surgeon said that it would be fine no one told me that you could have them removed now i wished that they did. Got into a car accident and now the whole plate is exposed and I now have no insurance to do anything about this So now i know that if any of my friends get one to let them know after so long to get it removed I am in so much pain right now it is worse than when I broke my jaw
