Hello! It’s nice to find others who have gone thru jaw surgery as well. I had a giant cell lesion removed from my lower mandible 4 yrs. ago and since have had one grafting from my fibula, iliac crest and am about to go in for plate removal and further bone grafting for implants. I’m having a significant amount of pain where my plate ends on the opposite side of my mouth and I’m anxious to get this plate gone, but I’m concerned about the incision. I was told that they have to incise higher under my chin to get the plate out so this means a whole new incision as i have one that already extends from my ear to the middle of my neck along the crease lone. Has anyone had lower mandible plate removal? If so how bout was the incision and it is barely noticeable after healing. Also does the jaw feel weaker without the pate? I’m kinda concerned a little about fractures later one, but i just can’t handle this plate anymore!

I know this is an old thread, but it was just what I was looking for. I had upper jaw surgery because I took a baseball to the face when I was around 12. I had the surgery at 17 and its now 13 years later and I started wondering about the plates and screws and if they would ever need to be removed and how involved it would be. Seems to be best just to let them be, though I feel the same way about having foreign objects in my body. Though I now have Terminator as a nickname which I don't really mind. ;)

I'm a little less worried if I ever do need to do it because of the posts here. For anyone contemplating the surgery, I had fantastic results, though I don't think I would ever want to do it again, it was worth it for the first go and it did help with my TMJ, grinding and headaches. An ortho was angry because they didn't leave my a retainer on my upper teeth and they have shifted - so advice would be to make sure you keep yours!

I ran into a very unusual problem trying to get the bone plate removed.

I have bone plates in the upper jaw since 1989. The one on the right has been giving me pain for a few years now. Last month, I went to an oral surgeon to have it removed. He cut my upper jaw open only to find out that he did not have the right screw driver to remove the screws. Over the last few weeks, his office has been searching all over for the screw driver without any success.

Did anyone run into this problem?

So if i eventually get rid of these screws with no metal in my mouth. My jaw bones will heal and attach to the bone. I want to know if it would be a normal jaw with the same strength. Does your jaw feel weaker after or better. I wanted to know because i wanted to do boxing and mma, please someone answer because i don't know if i can live without training ever again.

    Hi all,

Just had my upper screws and plates removed on MONDAY. I have had nothing but horrible sinus infections since i had the jawsurgery. My ENT was starting to think that my body may have been rejecting the titanium. Plate removal was not as bad as original surgery, but still am very swollen. Just wondering how long i am going to be swollen. i really hope the removal helps with my health issues. If anything, getting rid of a foreign object has got to be better for me.
