Hey
I had an overbite, so they moved my lower jaw forward 8mm, and they cut my upper jaw into 3 pieces, expanded it and moved the center piece just a little inwards.
I did not have a genioplasty. I guess I didn't need it, since I just had an overbite. I actually have a chin now! If your surgeon suggests you get a genioplasty, then you probably should.
My surgeon never suggested that for me, but its better to get it all over with at once.

Hi Billie,
I had a pretty severe underbite, and my total movement was about 11mm. When they moved my lower jaw back, they made an incision, then extended my chin back out, so it wouldn't look like my underbite turned into an overbite with the big movement.
I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

oh ok thank you for the replys. Brandon was that a genioplasty you had then re the chin incision? Wow they moved you quite a lot re 11mm. my bite is an open bite meaning my teeth sit directly on top of each other. From what I've seen the ops where they realign the chin as well as the jaw have the best outcome visually.
Brandon should the site not email people to notify them of replys re this forum? just a thought..maybe you can activate that faculty...its a great site, very helpful and imparts vital info to help people through unknown jaw surgery territory!! Thanks you're a star!!
Thanks Stacey for your reply I didn't realize that they move jaws that much i thought it ranged from 4-6 mm!!!
Thanks guys!

hi Billy! I think it depends with your orthodontists and primarily your oral and maxilofacial surgeon on how much your upper and or lower they will move forward and backwards respectively and whether you need genioplasty on the chin. They will be the one who will measure based on your findings, e.g. casts, x-rays etc.
I, myself is about to go with the procedure within the next two years and I'm excited about it lol. Excited because i was being enlightened already by researching and talking to people who actually undergone with the procedure, before this I was totally scared as shit lolPosted 1 year ago # -
Brandon please can u clarify was it the UPPER JAW they moved 11mm??
Thats good Bobby!! Goodluck!! Erm I should point out that in my case the surgeons encouraged me to collaborate...I was told to clarify what exactly i didnt like about my face and to identify the issue...so they can be sure the operation isn't in vain, pun very intended LOL! basically my bite isn't extremely out of sync but the upper face is slightly set back...i want a more advanced upper ..to clarify the area above the mouth to be more forward and not so flat. After explaining it verbally and through pictures they felt 4mm would not give me the look i want but said 7/8mm would. the fact is i dont want to go to all that trouble to have only a subtle change and be still massively unhappy at the end of the 2 year drama...the moral of the story is be mindful of what youre doing research and question and think over if their proposals will fully fix your unique issue. Erm I'm not scared now but I rekon the day of surgery I'll probably be freaked out in an aslyum renfield lost the plot kinda way haha LOL!

Thank you! Good luck to you too!
Let me guess, you are a Class 3 underbite right?
What I've known is two jaw involvements is better than one when it comes to results, bite occlusion and stability. But then again, it'll still depend with your case, if you really have a severe one then I think two jaw surgery is the best, genioplasty is used to define your chin like if you have a prominent chin then they will reduce it and vice versa. As you've told that you have a flat mid-face then I think you need an upper as well. As for me, the initial planned procedure is two jaw with the chin. Upper to be brought forward, lower backwards and the chin will be reduced(genioplasty. I am a class 3 malloclusion by the way lol
Though I'm really concerned about my nose if they will do my upper jaw, for sure there will be some changes with the nose e.g. shape or position, there are people who got a good result with their noses after the upper surgery and there the ones who complained also, basically that makes me really confused. Maybe it'll depend on how drastic they are going to move your upper jaw forward. I'm seeking another opinion from another surgeon what I really need to be done based on their perspective based on the findings lol!
Better tell them what you really want, have an open communication- after all this will be the most basic factor for the successful surgery =)Same, I cannot imagine myself on that day but they say you're out of it before you know it, after that it's all over and the next thing you have to worry is the liquid diet lmfao! and the final results in which after the swelling subsides completely!
