I am getting jaw surgery to move my bottom jaw forward sometime this year..I was wondering what peoples experiences have been with this surgery. I have heard that you can get complications like permanently numb lips and disc adhesion....what was your surgery like? do you regret it, was it worth it??

There are always risks with any surgery like this, but I feel that mine was 100% worth it, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

Well, don't let me scare you, but I would ask to see pictures of patients who had this surgery. Ask to see the front of their faces and not just the profile. Your profile will look better for sure, but I do not like the way the front of my face looks now - I look square and more masculine.
Also, you may want to ask about the chances of TMJ pain later. I now have pain on my left side constantly.
I'm sure these two issues are rare though, but it's worth asking about. Good luck.

did you have tmj before the surgery? why did you need to have the surgery?

I dont mind if it looks masculine.. I would prefer that to looking like mr burns which is how I look now.

Hi Maisy, I think I did have very mild TMJ before the surgery. Before surgery, I heard jaw popping noises sometimes if I chewed gum for a prolonged period of time, so I avoided gum and never had problems. Now, I experience daily discomfort. Yawning, talking sometimes, leaning my head on my left side always, wearing my rubberbands as the ortho wants me to, chewing anything harder than eggs on my right side pulls on my left jaw joint for some reason - there is just pain and headaches daily.
They moved my lower jaw forward 5mm which I guess is not that much. I guess maybe my older age had something to do with this pain issue.

Oh, that really sucks..sorry you have to deal with that..I hope it gets a bit better. Thankyou for the answers, I have been reading alot of the forum and it seems most people are happy with their surgery..I just get very nervous when I hear the complications that can happen. Hopefully mine will go ok..

I had my lower jaw moved forward (sagittal split osteotomy) almost 6 weeks ago. My chin and my lower lip are still numb but it does not bother me anymore. My profile is totally different now and others have noticed it too and say my cheek bones are more defined. My surgery was not done for cosmetic reasons, but that was a benefit of it. One of the drawbacks is that the surgeon may not have gotten my bite in the right spot, so I may need surgery again. I will find out for sure in a few weeks. None of my teeth on the right side touch and only two teeth on the left side touch and I still have an overbite (not as severe). However, I have heard from a ton of people who have had a successful surgery so don't let a few bad ones (and I wouldn't call mine bad, just not exactly perfect) scare you.

are you anxious about the second surgery?

A little bit. I won't know anything for sure until I go see my surgeon at the end of the week so I'm anxious for that appointment now. I was very upset when I found out about the possibility of having a second surgery but I have calmed down since then. I've been through it once, and I would never want to go through it again, but at least I would know what to expect a second time..
