Wow, what a great blog. It's great to be able to see what other people are going through too. I just had upper jaw surgery two weeks ago, I know it is still very early in the process. Most of my swelling has gone down, except the upper lip and my nose looks wider. I have read that others have had the same type of thing go on. I have read that some of the swelling can't take up to 6 months to go away? I am getting nervous because I definitely do not look like myself right now, my teeth look great but my lips and nose are not what I had before. Has anyone else had this happen and will the swelling go down more over the next few weeks?

Hi DMP212 - I havne't had surgery yet but I hear that it can take up to 1 year for total swelling to dissipate. How much movement did you have in your upper jaw? I have read tons of blogs and please find comfort in knowing that your still swollen and things will settle down over time. My surgeon says on average, only 80% swelling is gone after two weeks although for some, this figure can even be less at the two week mark. Hang in there!
Double jaw surgery on 12/17/11. BSSO mandibular advancement of 10 mm; two-piece le fort 1 with 3 mm impaction and maxilla brought forward 1 mm.

Hello, after the surgery, I had alot of movement in my upper jaw. My front teeth all the way back to my incisors did not touch at all and now I have a pretty much perfect bite. I am just anxious about the way my mouth looks when smiling because of the swelling. I guess I just have to be patient, and let it run it's course. Thanks for the reply.

I'm 6 months post op and still have slight swelling in my cheeks. It takes a serious amount of time for swelling to go completely and longer if you're older (I'm 34). I know it's tough when you think you look awful but trust me, in time it gets better!

Hi DMP212,
I too had upper (and lower) jaw surgery 2 weeks ago. My face is slowly starting to shrink, I am still unrecognizable! My upper lip is MAD huge and so swollen. My nose is way too wide, I look like miss piggy hahaha. My friends accidentally gave me a smoothie that I'm allergic to and now my lips are swollen above normal. So you can imagine what I'm going through.
I have patience, before my bruising and swelling reached it's peak... I could tell my nose looked great, even better pre-op! It's straighter, nicer shape, nostrils a bit wide but not too uncomfortably noticeable. I guess we just need to have enough patience and let our faces naturally swell down.
I'm kinda getting used to my new puffy face. I'm a very skinny girl, so this change is quite humorous. Look at the bright side of things ;-)

You say majority of your swelling but you are far off. I thought I was good after 4-6 weeks but there was much more to go!(which is a good thing of course)
lots of fluids are really important and remember to go out for walks whenever you can.
Even though you may think your face is a bit swollen people will not notice if they do not know you. :)

I had upper surgery one week ago and my swelling is freaking me out, but he docs assured me it would complety go away, but that "visible" swelling would take about 4-6 weeks to go away. On a microscopic level swelling can take 6 months to a year to finish. Remember, it will go away completely (be patient) and swelling in itself is your body healing itself!

hey im 9 days post op lower and upper surgery, my swelling has gone down loads its not as bad as i thought it wud turn out, bursing started too which is good sign, no wot u mean about looking like miss piggy.lol
try sleep uprite and take ur meds cuz one of them will be for swelling and inflammority. Sleeping up rite reduces swelling teh doc told me and it seems to be wrking, invest in a good travel pillow.
ill be happy if by the 6 wks that i was told for recovery that most swelling will be down but it is ture it can take months and even up to a year for ur face to go into the shape it will stay.
Just hold out and patience is the key!!!
good luck with ur recovery. :-)
