Mushy Diet with Braces; 1 tooth touch

    Hi guys and gals! :D
    Just one more question! haha

Okay, now my teeth touch at only one spot. Before I had my braces 'installed' most of my maulers DID touch, now only two (one top, one bottom). When I do make contact between the jaws I have a sharp pain- kind of like if I was chewing on aluminum when I had metal fillings. Yes, it is not that pleasant. haha

Anyway, it looks like my diet is going to be basically the same as if I was coming out of surgery (all mush!) for the next 2 years. My orthodontist is strict on my diet. I can't have cereal until it's really soggy. I haven't chewed for about 3 days now. I tried eating a cracker so I just sucked on it till I could swallow. So I was wandering if there is anything any of you could think of that I could do or eat. I've been living off of mashed potatoes, gravy, ground meats, and rice. My diet HAS to have a little more range than that, haha. I can do smoothies! Maybe stay away from sugary things because of my braces. Any ideas??

    Hey!
I am JoAnna-20 yrs. old, and I have a Class 3 under-bite.I'm having maxillofacial jaw surgery(the top and bottom jaw surgery-but I'll have my chin adjusted as well)and got my braces 5/21/10.
My surgery date is Valentine's Day 2012. Super excited =D

Jo, don't fret too much about it I guess. Your bite should improve as your braces moves teeth around more, but ask your dentist about that. Also the pain feel, ask them about that too if they could fix that. You can't live two years on this type of diet! All those food commercials....

Before my braces I had about 10 or so teeth touching (badly, but still touching) and just a fee days after putting them on I only had 4 molars touching until surgery. This sucked bad, it took forever to eat, and had to cut everything up with a knife.

I wasn't able to eat stuff like cereal or crackers or chips until at least a week after firs putting the braces on. After that I ate almost everything crunchy and hard, just slowly. Your main goal: don't break the braces, don't move your teeth when eating hard stuff. After the next few ortho appointments it would only take 1-2 days for my teeth to be ok for the hard stuff.

I did tell him that I could only touch on one tooth, he said that is fine and it is probably going to be like that for the most part (more than likely because they are fixing my cross-bite at the same time). As for the pain; i am going to call him tomorrow, I'm sure it's nothing. Today i was able to eat a sandwich (sloppy joe) with out difficulty! I was happy about that! ^_^

I see. Well those two teeth should be good enough to eat many things, just will take at least double the time to do so. And yeah the pain, it's got to be some of metals touching your gums or something of the sort, so they better help you out! Haha. Good luck!

Thanks! =D I got one of those round mirror tools (the kind they use when your in the chair), and I found the culprit. My bottom tooth isn't hitting the top tooth but hitting the "O-ring" on my top. It's hitting the part that the rubber bands hang on to! I found a solution though so I don't have to make an apt again, I just put a thick piece of wax and I am fine for a while! :D Thank you! =)

Poor thing--but I can relate. I have had braces on over a year, and still only have 1 tooth that touches. I, too, experience a type of sharp pain if I chomp on that tooth too much...it's like it's getting too much pressure and can't take over for the rest of my mouth! I am having surgery in about a month, but even before I ever knew I needed surgery, I was on basically a 'mush diet'. Over time I could just eat less and less. This week I realized that even a soft piece of bread was too much to handle. It sucks, but with orthodontics and/or surgery eventually you should be able to chew again. I would say be careful about trying to chew harder things...I don't know if you are getting surgery soon or not, sounds like you need it but I don't know. If you are a surgical pt, I would say don't try to eat hard things, b/c the pain and stress that comes from that is different than just the pain that comes from having your braces on/tightened, etc. That pain should subside and it's normal for that to be painful the first few days after. And sometimes w/that pain the more you get used to chewing the better it gets. This sounds like more of a bite issue to me though. I can't handle a lot of sugary foods, so what I do every morning is make a green smoothie with spinach, carrot, and then add an apple or blueberries or some kind of fruit to make it taste good....you can't even taste the veggies and then you get a lot more nutrients that way too! You can add juice or protein powder or peanut butter, get creative. It's so hard, I know how it is to eat the same 5 foods over and over! We eat a lot of Thai food too, the rice noodles and sauces are pretty easy to just slurp down! Good luck!

How do you take pain medication when your jaws are wired shut?
