    Hello all,
I am new to the forum but have been reading for a couple of weeks - since I got through with my own double jaw surgery. This forum is a great help.

I am completely wired (not banded) shut and it's very hard to get the calories I need due to not being able to get anything through my splint and wires that's thicker than a smoothie. I can't even seem to get creamy soups through without a lot of difficulty.

So far, I've found the absolute best thing I can eat is KFC Mashed Potatoes and gravy diluted with milk. Besides protein / meal replacement drinks, this is essentially the extent of my diet. I would love to hear some additional suggestions on things that us "wired" folks can eat and also if there are any other people who are wired who are in the same predicament or if you're able to get more food through than I am. Thanks

    Hallo Jaw,

Hope it's all going well for you.
I've posted on a few other topics about what I manage to eat.
I'm completely banded shut with a wafer, so I can't open my mouth at all and every thing is being syringed in too.

I keep trying blended this and that, but I find I can't stomach them.
What I'm sticking to is meal replacements, milkshakes and soups. All of which are now painfully boring!

I've tried semolina recently, which was pretty tasty and smooth. I added extra milk to make it runny. I also try a really thin porridge, with plenty of sugar, that fills a space, it's a bit messy to eat, but so is everything else, haha. I'd say see if you have scandishake available to you, its a meal replacement powder. I mix it with whole milk and smooth peanut butter, going to try with some fruit at a later date, it tastes a lot nice than just ensure.

I tried to blend baked beans with a little cheese today, my family ate pizza in front of me and I was so desperate for tomato-cheesy goodness... It didn't work and I can't believe how upset I got about it! As such, I'm leaving being adventurous alone and sticking with the basics. I've got three more weeks completely banded shut, then two weeks of loose bands. I'll try new things then I reckon. Sorry to not be more helpful!

Is it that hard to eat with the splint? I am having surgery on monday & now I'm getting worried.

@kscott what's semolina? & where can you find smooth peanut butter? I actually just tried a meal replacement shake at the gym I go to called "peanut butter cup" it was AMAZING! The guy that made it said he used milk, yogurt, oats, protein, and peanut butter. It wasn't regular peanut butter though.

    Hey xtina :)

I call it a wafer, so I'm assuming it's the same as a splint, it's a plastic teeth guard, the easiest I can describe is like the bit your teeth grip onto on a gum shield.
Mine covers the whole bite, so I cant suck anything through my teeth, or open my teeth at all. That's where the difficulty comes with eating.

Everyone seems to develop little ways to make it easier. In hospital I was given squeezy water bottles with a built in straw, the straw slides down the side of my cheek and the liquid goes in behind the back teeth. It's odd at first but you get used to it, esp as your swelling goes down. I promise you'll be fine!

Semolina is a type of grain, I have it in pudding form, it's similar to rice pudding, but SO much smoother with no lumps, which is a must when you can only swallow so much at a time.

I've read a lot about those kind of home made meal replacement drinks, they seem pretty simple to make, a lot of them seem to have a basic base, just adjusted to taste. I'm in the UK so smooth peanut butter is available right next to chunky peanut butter. I suppose if you have a good enough blender, or a sieve, then chunky wont matter too much. You will get to a point where you want to mix up any and everything. I'm gonna try chocolate peanut and banana next, just for something different.

You'll get the hang of it though, don't worry :)

Kscott I am going to be banded shut too with a splint. So I will probably have to do what you're doing. (use a syringe) Thanks your your feed back. It's very helpful.

Jawbreaker911 you're having surgery on Tuesday? I will definitely try to be on asap. :) Good luck!!

The syringe can ache after a while, so if you can find yourself a squeezy bottle with a straw it'll really help you out I think.

It's been great since I've been able to eat more, The bottle I have fits just over can a tin of soup, so I can snuggle down and get comfy with plenty of tissues and eat.

I just took a photo so people can understand what I mean! Here is my water bottle and my medication bottle. I don't know how I would have coped without these nifty things :)

Did you get given those bottles with the straw at hospital? I've been told I will get a syringe, but they'd be handy for water.

I'm being wired shut for 6 weeks, so these tips will be great that you've all shared. Think I'll invest in semolina, haven't had that since I was at school!

I hadn't had any since school either!
It was awesome though. Hot and sweet and something that wasn't leek and potato soup!

I got given 3 of those in the hospital and then when I saw my orthodontist he gave me some other ones too, they stain really easily, tomato soup has left some of them looking a bit icky. They gave me 3 syringes too, and loads of tissues, haha.

I hope it goes awesome for you, fingers crossed!

    Hi.

I had jawsurgery september first and was wired shut with a splint. The best thing that I ate the entire time was a chicken pot pie mixed with chicken broth that I used a handheld submersion blender to make very thin and then sucked it down with a syringe. if you can get past the look, it actually tasted wonderful! Also did meatballs with cream of mushroom soup that way. I promise it gets easier!!
