Hey, I am 3 weeks post op from double jaw surgery and genioplasty and I literally have no feeling in my chin and lower lip. I don't have any tingly feeling either, its just dead. I'm relatively young (24) and the surgeon said he did not cut any of the nerves. Its hard for me to believe him at this point because I feel like I should have some type of sensation, I have full sensation in my upper lip and cheeks (and that area was never numb even right after surgery). Is it normal to not have any sensation in the bottom lip/chin at this point in the recovery stage?

Also, I feel like the area between my lip and nose is kinda weird. it feels like they stiched the inside back together really tight and its holding my upper lip up and kind of making it feel like there is too much flesh, which makes it feel like i have something pushing the area between my upper lip and nose outward. Has anyone else had this feeling? Thanks.

I'm 5 weeks post op and have no feeling in my lower lip or chin, but I have had some tingling. I'm getting a little worried myself, although I know they say it can take up to 3 months before feeling comes back.

I'd love for other members to post when their feeling came back.

The area between my upper lip and nose was -- and still is a little -- puffy and my upper lip looked very thin when I smiled. I think it's due to swelling. It hasn't gone away completely, but it's slowly getting better.

Yea this is the worst. Did your surgeon say that your nerves were in tact?

Actually one of my nerves was cut. It was repaired, but it could affect the return of sensation. No nerves were cut on the other side though, and I still have no feeling there either.

Give it time the feeling will come back. While the nerves were not cut in your they were still trumatized. I am a year post op (and neither nerve was cut during my surgery) and still have some numbness in my lower jaw/lip area, and the feeling coming back slowly. I am a little older then you (41), but my surgeon told me right from the beginning that most people take 6 months to a year+ for the feeling to come back completely. I am at a point now unless I think about it I forget that I don't have feeling in the area.

  6. I am experiencing exactly the same as you in terms of both numbness in the chin and lower lip plus the upper lip stitching, so it can't be that uncommon.

I assume you are 4 weeks post op now - how have things improved?

I forgot to say - I am 3 weeks post op today.

yea ill be 4 weeks post surgery come thursday. Things have not gotten better yet. swelling has gone down but in terms of the numbness and odd feeling between the nose and upper lip, its the same. When I talked to my surgeon, he said it was normal to be completely numb 3 weeks post op and that I should wait till 6 months post op to start evaluating that part of the recovery. In terms of the area between my upper lip and nose, he didn't really understand what i was talking about when i tried to explain it to him, and said that the weird feeling could be attributed to numbness of the gums (which i have) and swelling.

I am almost 7 weeks Post Op (this Wed) and I still can't feel the outside of all of my teeth & gums, the left side of the roof of my mouth and about 5 of the inside of my top teeth (left side). I had the same surgery, upper lower and chin done. I will say it seemed like nothing was changing up until about 3 1/2 weeks Post Op. Now I am starting to slowly see improvement. SLOWLY being the key word. It's painful how slow this part of recovery is but the good news it is getting better. Like you my chin and lower lip have been completely numb. In the beginning they were both 100% dead. Now I can feel the right side of my lip and if I scratch my finger along the right side of my chin I can feel the sensation of that. I think once the lip and chin started to burn quite badly and were even painful at times with nerve activity is when things started to get feeling back even if it was just a small amount. Hang in there, I still am :)

Hi everyone, thank you for sharing your healing stories. I'm still struggling to make the decision whether or not going for the surgery. After all, your experiences here give me more courage to take the surgery soon (might be this christmas or next summer) since I've been obssessive just for thinking about making the decision. Are you glad that you got the surgery done? Is it worth it?

I hope you all feel better :)

Hi DG - I'm 11 weeks and 2 days post op from upper, lower and genioplasty. My chin and lower lip are still very numb on the left side and somewhat numb on the right side. I still can't feel my gums on the top or bottom. From what I hear, it's normal, but like HulaMommy says, it comes back very SLOWLY, annoyingly so. Oh and I still have some swelling on both sides. The left moreso than the right. Try not to worry too much yet.
