Hey im 20years old student and live in the nrth west and my underbite has been getting to me a lot recently. Been to the dentist, in the procedure of getting fillings done then will be refered to an orthodontist about my underbite, i think i have a cross bite as well because my smile is bent to a side. Jus wondering how long will it take for the orthodontist appointment and for me to get braces and will it be covered by the NHS? would be grateful of any replies

Hi. I was referred to the hospital and had my first appointment within weeks. I had to wait a few months after my xrays for my braces to be fitted. Everything has been covered in full by NHS. Good luck :)

Bsso for overbite on 21st December. Lower advanced 8mm upper impacted by 3mm and moved forward 2mm.

My braces and surgery was covered by the NHS.

I had a lot of waiting, but that just seems to be my area!

I was told when I was younger I needed surgery though, is it the first time you've been told?

Im 19 and had the surgery a month ago

I had all mine done on the NHS. Can't remember how long it took for my regular dentist to refer me to the hospital orthodontist, but I know I had my moulds taken in June or July 2009 and I got my braces in like January 2010, with x-rays and photos in between, then had the surgery in August 2011, and then braces off just under 2 weeks ago.

My mum knew I had problems with my jaw etc when I was 4 years old and that I'd have problems with it down the line. I obviously couldn't have the surgery that young though, lol.

Hi I currently have braces on NHS I didn't get
Both sets put on for about 4 months because you have to have seperators
Then the top set for a while then bottom set.

I waited about 6 weeks for initial appt but I supose there are local differences.

Those who have had surgery on NHS how's your recovery and how long till you could eat.
I'm nearly 30 and expecting surgery in the summer which will be about 15 months from when my braces went on.

Surgery hopefully (kinda) in the summer. Scared, excited - wish I could fast forward 24 months but then life is for living so I plan on making the most of it!!

I was starting to chew food again from about 4 weeks after NHS surgery. I wasn't banded shut or anything, so eating was never really a problem for me, nor taking medication.

I'm 4 weeks post op snd on liquid diet. I have everything through straws or syringes. I've been banded shut since 2 post-op.

I won't be chewing for ages yet - soon ill hopefully move onto soft foods bit won't be able to chew, so mashed potato (unblended)yogurts etc. I have to currently blend my food, but have been living on smoothies & milkshakes.

The hardest part of my recovery was mentally, and watching your family enjoy their Christmas dinner while you can't eat was horrible.

All I read on here was how unpainful it was, but I was in pain as my jaw wasn't banded shut in the right place, once it was I had no pain apart from muscle spasms

I take all my meds through a syringe, but have stopped taking them
Now. The liquid meds taste awful, I preferred getting them through my drip!

I'm in the north west are you? I was referred to see an NHS orthodontist at Chester hospital which took three months. It then took a further 16 months before I had my braces fitted (there was a long wsiting list!). I had my braces for 10 months pre op and 6 months post op. I had my double jaw surgery done at Aintree hospital which was one of the best hopsitals i've ever been to. I had an underbite and crossbite corrected.
I'm 34 years old and have no post op complications at seven months post op.
It was a long wait but it depends how busy your orthodontist and surgeon are, plus where you are in the country can make a difference too.
I had everything covered by the NHS and only had to past for my whitening afterwards

Hi Rachel thanks for that I can't wait til I'm in your position. I'm having treatment at Barnet and Chase Farm
North London. No brace and teeth whitening!! Can't wait. Are you happy with the result? X
